Since December 6, of last year (2006), I've applied for nearly forty jobs, some with my old company. I've only been asked to interview with two companies. I've only received about 4 or 5 rejection letters. The rest have not contacted me in any form.

I need to determine why I'm not being considered for these positions. Here's my background:

I have extensive customer service and clerical experience. My last position was seven years ago with a major company. I was quickly promoted within that company and had an excellent job record. I quit working to stay home with my child. In that seven year absence, I've raised my daughter and have worked as a freelance writer and novelist. My novels haven't been published but my non-fiction and short fiction have. I've also volunteered at my daughter's school and I'm a Girl Scout leader. I've updated my resume to indicate include my writing, volunteer work and my Girl Scout leader information.

The manager is known to customers and staff alike as "the bloke with the bad breath" in the shop. Staff are having problems with the smell whilst in close proximity to the foul emmissions issuing forth from his mouth. How can something be done (in a kind, non agressive way) about the smell?

New job and my supervisor ignores me and treats me so rudely and has no class whatsoever. I think she feels threatened by me as others tell me I am the best to walk in the door so far. Mind you, in the last year, 7 people have left this job. Now I know why!!

This happened to me a few years ago -- early 2000s. Of course, I was angry and carried around that negative emotion for a long time (mostly internally) because what happened to me wasn't fair. And it affected my energy and job searching. But I realized that it was a blessing in disguise. I found another career path and better job. Also, took night classes. Well, bad management still peeves me. I came to the realization that it wasn't about job performance but more like not fitting in with a bunch of middle-aged cliques. Office politics should be banned! Of course, I know it won't, but you know what I mean. I'm sick of that and favoritism.

Im an elecrtician and after 14 years doing the same job over and over im bored.
I feel like im wasting my life and that im capable of doing so much more, or even something that I enjoy doing.
I work in a family business and feel that I dont want to end up with nothing else in my life apart from work which generally runs my life.

Im into all sorts and good at most things manual that I turn my hand to. Im artisitic and very proud of my work.

Should I stop moaning and get on with life or just grasp life by the balls and go for something differen and rewarding to me?

This might be for an American audiance...but anyway. She works in D.C and is leaving her job anyway at the end of April. She has been asked to go to Denver for four days in mid April to train a person to do her job. She does not want to go. Anybody out there come up with a sensible get-out. She flies all the time, so a fear wont work. They can also move the date, so illness wont work either. Anybody with a sneaky mind????

I have an employee that is a very good worker, however, she skips out of work early the majority of the time when she thinks that I won't notice.

I have spoken to her about this already a few times, but it does not stop her from doing it. I have ways to track her when I'm not there if she's leaving early.

Since I am paying out of my pocket for her salary, I would think she would have some respect and listen to me. I really don't want to fire her since she is the best employee (which I praise her) I've had so far aside from this frequent leaving an hour early habit.

My idea is to grab her car keys while she is in the restroom (she leaves them right in the open on her desk), run out to her car and take my car club lock and place it on her steering wheel, with a note that says, please work your full hours, come back inside.

Then, when it is time for her to leave, I'll walk out with her and unlock the club from her car.

Do you think this will knock some sense into her?

I have worked in the computer field for 15 years as a Computer Specialist. I’m unable to find work and getting very close to being homeless! Furthermore, have Type 1 Diabetes and the cost of my insulin and supplies are more than $900.00 per month. I have not been able to take my insulin for over two weeks now because I can’t afford it. I have worked all of my life and never ever thought that I would find myself in this position. I would be very grateful for any advice that anyone could give me. Thank you for your time.

I had a friend run into this recently. During an interview, she was asked how long she planned to stay at the job if she was hired. She kind of felt put on the spot, and I told her I didn't think that was a very appropiate question. She had planned to stay for a while and be a dedicated employee, but she felt awkward answering the question, and I would have to.

Did the employer overstep a boundary here? I personally think they did. What if you got the job, and then left six months later because you realized that you hated it? That's not your fault, and I would hope they wouldn't bring up the "how long" interview question when you left. Leaving a company is usually the employees perogitive, and you don't have to give specific reasons when you leave, unless it says so in any contracts you sign when you come aboard.

Any comments?

She belittles her 2 other partners in firm wide meetings, tells someone that 100 hours of research is "sketchy" work, clearly has her pets in the office who smoke and drink to excess with her on weekends and fawn all over her. She has no other life than work and expects the same 24/7 dedication from everyone else. She caters to her few while the rest of the staff do the work and get "put down" or totally ignored for the work they have done. The managing partner is wonderful but also caters to her every whim. I plan of moving on soon but feel bad for co-workers who can't see themselves elsewhere at this time. What can I do to help them?

I was offered a new position with another company, the offer was made verbally and I was told that a hard copy would be in the mail. I gave authorization for a background check/credit check. I've already given notice to my current employer should I have waited for the actual offer letter to resign, or can the new company take the offer off the table. The new company gave me a projected start date and said they would confirm once the background check cleared. Did I jump the gun, I mean I don't have anything to worry about except for my credit not being that great.

Ok, I work in a small office (only me, the accounts lady and the boss) and have been here for 2 years. My fiance and me are getting married in September and are thinking about trying for a baby shortly after although we have not discussed this with anyone.

Anyway the accounts lady (in her 60's) was harping on about the new maternity law where you are entitled to 9 months off with SMP and she was saying that she doesnt see how a company of this size could even consider holding someones job open for that amount of time, taking into consideration that someone would have to be in here for two months prior for training considering what a diverse role I have and it seemed that she was sort of pre-warning me. I already feel bad that I might leave to have a baby but I have every intention of coming back to work but is there anything they can do to "push me out" as such.
