I have worked in the computer field for 15 years as a Computer Specialist. I’m unable to find work and getting very close to being homeless! Furthermore, have Type 1 Diabetes and the cost of my insulin and supplies are more than $900.00 per month. I have not been able to take my insulin for over two weeks now because I can’t afford it. I have worked all of my life and never ever thought that I would find myself in this position. I would be very grateful for any advice that anyone could give me. Thank you for your time.

Start your own company. Go to people's homes and take care of their computer problems or have them bring their computers to you and fix them. Teach people how to use their computers.

There are a lot of opportunities for a person with your skills.

Put computers together and sell them.

I am exactly like you are. Except I don't have that many years experience as you do as a hardware tech. I also have type 1 diabetes and am on an Insulin Pump. First and foremost apply for SSI and SSD, and get on your States Medicaid Program and get your Insulin, or you will Die! Also if you were in the military, apply for VA benefits. You could get free Medical from them if you qualify. Also, I went to School to be a Hardware Tech, and that was right when People in silicon Valley were Pink Slipped. So I'm doing what Renate said and I posted a flyer of my skills in grocery store bulletin boards, and pretty soon I got calls for Jobs and word of mouth spread, and now I get like 5-10 jobs a month. And if you keep your prices lower then everyone else and you're good and honest with people, then you'll have more work then you know what to do with. Good Luck, I hope this helps you!

First things first contact your social service office to find any programs that can help with your medication. Also if you have a local branch of Salvation Army contact them..sometimes they will help with rent/ utilities when something like this very situation comes up.
As far as being a computer specialist, and not being able to find work. try a different approach. there is a website called Monster.com where you can post your resume, and employers will look at it. It could lead to jobs you can't apply for because they are not advertised. otherwise what i would do, if you want to remain in the field is look at maybe specializing your skills. Maybe talk to someone about the " hot" jobs in the field and she if you have the expierence and training to switch out without going back to school.
Also I would recommed visiting your umemployment office sometimes they run programs for people like you who have skills but, can't find work.
Also, if neither place can help you with your meds please call your Dr. I am sure he has avenues to persue, you may not know of. Good luck..I'll be thinking of you.
heres some webites i think might help you.
the second link is for LIHEAP...a program for energy assistance.
Also, check the churches in your area. Most of the time you do not have to be a memeber but, be very honest and a lot of times they can help you.

You need to go on monster.com and post your resume, you will get alot of responds within a week. Also try going on craigslist.com and going under your state and city and looking at jobs available. there are many options. Sitting around isn't going to find you a job however and to me the newspaper sucks at job lists. You should be on unemployment and earning some money right now and you can go to a hosptial and get rated for your insulin and supplies and get them at a fraction of the cost. There is alot of things out there for people unemployed. Until you find a job that is. Were you fired? or did your company shut down? I would defintly recomend them sites.

Are you looking for work only in your local area? Is moving to another part of the country a viable option?
