Iäm going to visit my brother in SF, most likely i will only have time to do this in February, is this a good time?

I'm currently living in Sweden so i will think it is warm if it is warmer then -10 C...

When you cross the border or arrive at airport, you are asked whether you have brought food. What is the real definition of "food", was it flesh fruit and meat only? how about cooked food, candy, cookies? Anything that can be eaten?

I'm wondering if it's such a hassel that it's not worth going. We plan to travel by car from Boston to New York and I supposed we'd get a place to stay in New Jersey the day before the parade, then take the subway into New York. We'd love to see it and I know it's an unforgettable experience but I don't know if hotels and the tube and the crowds will make it worth it. Would hotels be too expensive or all booked? Would the investment in driving time and getting to the parade etc. be worth all the effort?
