If you only need a place for 2 - 3 months, you should start checking Craigslist for room-mate/sublet situations.

That is probably the best way to get a nice place, and you won't have to worry about furnishings or anything like that.

Contrary to what people say, you can get a nice apartment in a nice area, it just takes a good bit of work. You have to be willing/able to see at least 10 apartments to find what you really want/feel comfortable with.

Some places to check:

Upper East Side (east of Lexington Avenue in 70's/80's there are lots of small walkups where you can get a good deal)

Columbia University Area - Broadway/110th Street - there are always students looking for room-mates and it is a nice area

Astoria - this is in Queens, not Manhattan, but it is close by and you can also find shares

East Village - the rents are probably higher, but there are lots of NYU students looking for people to sublet/share space

Good Luck!

Why don't you go to a suburb, like Port Chester or New Rochelle, they are about 40 minutes from Manhattan by train, but you can find good prices there, trains run up to 1.30 a.m.

You can get a big place, locations are nice and it is not that expensive as in NY

The better the neighborhood the higher the price. I suggest looking in Yonkers or the Bronx. Both are a short ride into Manhattan with some traffic of course. But the neighborhoods aren't too bad and the apt. prices are reasonable.

NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world. My suggestion would be to find either a 'room mate wanted' situation for a few months or look into renting a room at the YMCA.

Good luck and enjoy NY!
