holy crap! that is going to be a long ride!!!
if it was me i would take an suv or a mini-van. that way you have room and if you need to pull over to sleep that will be more comfy than a little car. but then again i suppose it depends on how many people are going with you....other than that i'd bring a cooler full of soda/water/juice and have some snack handy. not only will that save you some money but it will save the time of pulling over....make sure you do get your oil changed at some point as well, if you take care of the car it will take care of you!

Any car, that has been maintained, should make a cross country trip. Four cylinders usually get better milage, but you loose comfort and space. If I were could only pick one vehicle.
It would be a KIA Sedona Mini Van. Good milage and plenty of space. Also good visibility and you could sleep in it if necessary.
Good luck on your trip.

During what time of the year ? How many people ?
I will say a toyota van is good because of the versatile. A van can give you some room to rest if you need it.
But the gas price will cost your big time.
Otherwise, I will say a corrolla or a camry will probably good choice on fuel economy

You need a rear-wheel-drive American V-8. I use a Crown Victoria for trips such as this, but the Lincoln and Mercury counterparts are also excellent, and Chrysler and GM have recently recovered their senses and resumed making rear-wheel-drive V-8's again.

Check with enterprise car rental. They have unlimited mileage in the continental U.S. & they have great rates. Plus you can choose what size vehicle you need & they offer road side assistance.

I recommend a 4x4 Ford Explorer, if your concern is not gas expenses.
