I'm wondering if it's such a hassel that it's not worth going. We plan to travel by car from Boston to New York and I supposed we'd get a place to stay in New Jersey the day before the parade, then take the subway into New York. We'd love to see it and I know it's an unforgettable experience but I don't know if hotels and the tube and the crowds will make it worth it. Would hotels be too expensive or all booked? Would the investment in driving time and getting to the parade etc. be worth all the effort?

You have to get on the route early, like 5 AM or earlier for a good spot, it is usually VERY cold in late November at 5 AM on the street, which will be crowed and have no places to go to the bathroom.
Forget taking the PATH Train (the 'Subway from Jersey') into 33rd Street that morning, 34th ST & Broadway & 6th Ave is Herald Square, the focal point of the parade, People show up 12 to 24 hours ahead to get into one of the very few public spots there.

Get there early and set up outside the Cosmic Cafe just below Cloumbus Circle. This way you can get food while the rest of your group keeps your place and you can trade off. Also there is a rest room in the Cafe! Brings chairs! There is a subway entrance at Columbus circle also. You will be at the beginning of the parade... have fun!
