I am going to San Diego for a long weekend in late January. Should I go to Tijuana while I am there? Is it worth it? Should I just concentrate on the beach?

I'll be leaving on a short trip to new york which will be my first time in the city....and was wondering whether it would be a good idea to actually look for a hotel when I land in new york city or book something online........are budget hotels packed on weekends or is it easy to just have a cab-driver take you somewhere and check in there and then...

somewhat of a stupid question....i know....but all responses would be greatly appreciated.....my main quirk is that i'll like to get a first hand feel of the place instead of just booking something online..
