I'm a Hilton Properties guy so I can tell you about the ones in the area. The Hilton Times Square and the Hilton NY both have a bit of cramped rooms.
I always stay at the DoubleTree Times Square. It has nice big rooms (expecially for the area). They are all suites with a separate living room and bedroom, with wonderful views (up to about 50 floors), of times square.
I'm headed there for NYE which is nice, because you have a sanctuary away from the madness below, but their prices go up then. I would imagine they are pretty reasonable right now. If not, try the Hampton Inn - Times Square north. It is just a few blocks up and over (I think like 52nd and 8th) from where you want to be. It also usually runs about $100 less per night than the Doubletree.
Good luck and have fun!

I met someone recently who recommended Radio City Suites as a nice hotel to stay at. She said it was about $90 a night, which is a good price for NYC.
Also, check the Howard Johnson on 8th Avenue, they recently did renovations there and it looks pretty nice now. I am not sure how much it costs.
If you want really cheap, check out the Big Apple Hostel, I have friends who have stayed there and say it is just fine.
Definitely check TripAdvisor before you go! There are some hotels around there that are pretty gross.
