Etiquette - November 2007

I work in a small community with a collection of shops. It's very slow this time of year, so I often chat with a worker from the shop next to mine. He is very nice, not threatening/hitting on, and also a lot like me, personality wise. He works for a store which has another location directly opposite my store, so it's the two stores (owned by the same person) and me in the middle. The worker often has to visit the other store to get supplies (they are a restaurant and a coffee shop respectively) for his store. Yesterday he came in and we were chatting, when he told me that the workers over at the other store talk about me all the time. They say that I am a gold-digger (because my husband is a doctor) and say mean things about my clothes, and basically pick apart my outward appearance. I was shocked when he told me they always talk about me, because most of them are nice to my face. I am really hurt that these people would say mean things about me when I regularly patronize their store!

I work in Human Resources and am constantly being judged by people. I am the most visible person in the company and known by all three hundred people in the company. I am always meeting with employees, doing presentations and meeting with managers about employee issues. I feel like a politician. I have to make difficult decisions, tell people what they do not want to hear and try to not be emotional in difficult situations.

But due to my visibillty, I am always being critized and people love to go to my boss and talk about me behind my back. I have survived at my employer for 7 years so senior management must like my work, but I hear alot of lower level managers and employees hate me.

How do you respond to complaints about you by coworkers?

Often, the service in new restaurants we visit is awful, and my friend makes her point by insisting she leaves her (very) small change to emphasise the point. Would it be better just to leave nothing?

We are very excited and proud of our new home and many of our friends and family live far away and may never see it in person. It is rather nice and we don't want people to be offended though. Yes or No? Thanks!

I answered a question the other day. The asker was visiting my city and asked if the hotel she had chosen was central and well located. I told her that while it was central, the area was rough and as a female traveller she would be better looking for a hotel in a different part of the city centre. The result was that I got lots of thumbs down. She chose an answer approving her choice of hotel as the best answer and just said that she hoped the negative answers weren't true.

So why did she ask in the first place?

My friend (A) has a friend (B) [who also happens to be his co-worker] who invited me and my friend (A) for his (B) birthday dinner. But my friend (A) suddenly has other plans. The thing is, I feel weird going alone since we're (me and B) not close or anything.

Should I go or not? Or do I just send the present? What is the proper thing to do?

Don't people know that you should plan for these contingencies when you travel? Why would you be pissed at the hotel front desk guy because the CAB that YOU called is running late? TELL ME PLEASE!?!?!?!?

And:
Does the color matter (pink/green /blue/old lady shades of blue & purple?
How about black, hispanic, or white - does it matter?
Is it any different if the person is 15 or 30?
What does it say to you when you see it?

WHY DO YOU CARE WHAT *COLOR SOMEONE ELSES HAIR IS*? Seriously.

That is what I want to know.

They really push past you without saying a word, or they run there trolley into you without saying anything, yet if its the other way round they curse you and everything, its really annoying and hard to treat them with respect, but i still do lol.

make a long story short, my Mom has always put my aunt, uncle and 3 cousins on this huge pedastel saying their the best and were very close..
Only time i saw them for years was on x-mas, thanksgiving, once in summer.
No phone calls to keep in touch in between.
I even moved 20 minutes away from them and never got a call once from them...
I tried reaching out and being friendly by writing friendly emails,, not once did i ever get a repky back from any of them..
I even asked one cousin to call me when he watches a movie i reccomended, he looked at me stunned and said "umm your phone is always busy:, " i said leave leave a messsage, he never did..
Then i visited another cousins town on my own, she was always sugry sweet in person on x-mas, in her town she was mean and did everything to get me to leave and never come back...-

So my question is arent these people Fake? I told my Mom if they cant keep in contact with me why should i even see them on holidays, dont i have a point?

I always thought I could hide my emotions really well, until lately I've realized I'm hopeless at it! How do you keep your composure and keep your emotions hidden in situations where you are very upset or irritated? Even though I have learned to keep my mouth shut, my body expressions tell all. How did you learn? Thank You.

This will probably sound like an odd question, but would dip leave a salty taste in someone's mouth? I've asked my boyfriend to quit, he promised he would. I can't watch him, I wouldn't anyways, but he knows if I catch him, he's dead. If it doesn't, what taste would it leave? Sorry if it's disgusting, but yeah.

Its a formal party. Example for a male and female couple whos names are bob and Jill Smith.

You would address it as, "Mr and Mrs Bob John Smith" But how would you adress the invitation for a lesbian couple?
