There is no proper way to retaliate. Why do you wish to retaliate?
The only proper response is to leave the situation. If you live together, move out. If you are in a situation where she keeps hitting you as you try to leave, then put your arms up to block the blows, but there is NEVER any excuse for retaliation. That would put you at her level and you'd be as wrong as she is.

Well, it kind of depends on whether the attack is physical or she is merely delivering herself of spoken abuse.
In either case, I think retaliation merely escalates the problem and then you end up looking bad for attacking someone else. Do not muddy your status as innocent party!
Having said that, if you are being whacked by her with say an umbrella, as Sybil Fawlty does to Basil in an episode of "Fawlty Towers" - remove yourself from umbrella range and go somewhere else.
If the attack is verbal, wait it out and try not to overly respond, which is what attackers want - it is a form of bullying, and you will disappoint and frustrate the attacker by either ignoring them or pretending not to understand such ridiculous stuff.
I hope that this is a theoretical question, as everyone knows that it is poor etiquette (or lack thereof) to attack anyone or indeed anything save perhaps a pile of work papers, or a delicious piece of cake.

Never hit back, sadly any retaliation from you puts you at risk of being labelled as the aggressor and puts you at risk of a criminal record. Swallow your pride and report her to the police. Insist on pressing charges. There is no way any woman should be allowed to get away with this type of behaviour.

End the relationship. Get an order of restraint. Call the police. Avoid being alone with her. It's nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. Keep reminding yourself that you are the victim.
Very important....do not strike her. If she is bruised you will have a hard time convincing anyone that you are the victim.
