Today she had gastric bypass surgery and she came through fine. I'm happy for her. Now the office wants everyone to pitch in so they can send her a gift basket of flowers, a book and a few magazines and I don't want to. It's not that I don't like her, but I feel like they're congratulating her for being lazy. Prior to this surgery she was supposed to be on a diet for 6 months. Her doctor gave her 2 months free and for the other 4 she never ate right(ordering chinese, fried chicken, bagels), never worked out. She didn't try at all, then complained when she gained 2-3lbs every month she weighed in. I realize it's the gesture the office is going for, but it bothers me. Am I just being rude or do I have a point?

She quoted Andrew Carnegie, the American tycoon, as saying that a lady should:

1 never give her opinion
2 play dumb
3 always wear white gloves

I have never been able to catch on to this set. Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing?

So i recently sent my resume to a company for a new position. I get a call a few days later from a HR person saying that they are interested in me and would like to schedule an appointment. I tell them that I am free to come in anytime and the person tells me that she would get back to me while she checked with the senior manager's schedules.

A week goes by and I hear nothing. At the end of that week, I decide to give the HR person a call. She tells me that she is still waiting on the managers to schedule that interview and that she "hasn't forgotten about me".

Its almost the middle of the second week and I have not heard anything else since last Friday. Now granted, this is a giant corporation that has thousands of employees and it is summer vacation season...but what do you think is really going on here?

Am I being led around? put on the shelf as backup? Did they change their mind? What should I do?

thanks!

I frequently travel secondary roads, and I go the speed limit as much as it's safe to on narrow, winding country roads, but people ride my fanny like I was crawling. It makes it difficult to pull over when a spot eventually shows up for me to safely pull over to allow them to pass.

So I went camping this weekend with some friends and we brought up my friends parent's RV. We took it to a lake and drove it down on the beach by the water. My group of friends have taken this trip for many years and knew exactly where to go and what to do. The main issue when we were leaving was how to get the RV off the beach. My friends who have taken this trip before were convinced they could find a route to get it out. The other option was to pay the $80 to have a tractor tow it out. Well the RV got stuck and a nice guy offered to help pull us out. In the process, the RV over heated so we thought. When we got the RV out it turns out the transmission blew. One of the friends feels it's the groups responsibility to split the $2-$3K for the transmission. Others think it is the RV owners. I don't know what to think because I can see both sides.

There have been two deaths in the last year since I have seen these relatives and we are having the usual every two year re-union . Typically I only talk to them at these get togethers and don't want to upset them . Is it better to not bring up the subject and wait if they do ? Or is it part of the healing process to talk about it ? I have only had relatives pass away when I was a little boy so I am not to keen on what is appropriate behavior . Is it taboo to bring up the topic ? These were very important people in our family. I just want to be as kind as I possibly can be yet I want to let them know that I care without putting my foot in my mouth . Does anyone have suggestions that may help everyone involved ? Both people that passed away are an Uncle ( my Dad's brother ) and my aunt ( my Dad's other brother's wife ) I am 49 and feel I should know better so that is why I am asking about this because I appreciate other people's opinions .
Please help me if you can . Thank you .

During a recent book club meeting I gave an opinion of a novel's character that apprently upset someone in the discussion. This person than proceeded to correct my perception of how I experienced the book and character. In this, and similiar situations where one is ridicule in front of others, what is the best response? For the sake of the book club meeting not turning ugly, I kept my mouth shut. Then again, I regret not saying anything as well.

My soon to be husband and I have decided to invite all of our friends and family out to dinner to celebrate our engagement. We are working on a very limited budget, but we still want our family and friends included in our new beginning. We want to send invitations with the expectation that guests will be paying for their own meals. Is this in poor taste?
We'd put a $, $$ or $$$ sign on the invitation to indicate the price range the guests should be prepared for...

I have worked as a cashier for the past 5 years. On more than one occasion, customers have given me little bits of trash to throw away for them. To say the very least, this is insulting, because it seems as though they not only look at us cashiers as the people who take their money and give them their change, but also as little more than maids. Not only does it show that these people are arrogant, but it also shows that they are too lazy and/or stupid to find the nearest trash can and throw away their own garbage!

Okay. I made a mistake here at work. I revealed to alot of employees something that was supposed to be a surprise. It's NOT too dire (meaning I wont' cost us $$ nor will I get sued). It's just that I got the email two months ago and it says surprise but I forgot it said that until I got an email from a superior saying "Did you tell them? It was supposed to be a surprise."
So now I'm freaked.
How do I reply? What should I say? Usually I'm like Mini-Me (saying "Yes, I messed up, so what?") and just take my mistakes in stride, but I feel REALLY bad about this one.

I work in a big book store and sometimes see people in there in there socks looking at books and reading. I thought that it was a pretty good idea so I figured I would give it a try. Do you think I should just show up for work without any shoes on? Or do you think that would be unwise? It looks super comfortable.

Me, my twin sister and our 5 friends want to buy one gift where all of us pay a part of it. It costs $300 and each pay $50 except me and my twin sister, we have to give $100 because theres two of us. Wouldn't it make more sense that we pay $50 together because its not our money but our parents money?

I think that the world has lost any sense of toughness. Everyone is sooo overly sensitive that speech is constantly being hindered and everyone is a victim. I know a woman who's daughter was "acquaintance raped" years ago and she now is on disability and attending community college on taxpayer dollars because she suffers from "second hand post traumatic stress disorder". Don Imus gets fired because he's stupid and made a derogatory comment! Al Sharpeton gets involved and the victim game gets started all over again. Why can't people just toughen up and roll with the punches once in awhile? What would the people who lived through the great depression say when people ***** about gaining too much weight and blame it on McDonalds? Am I alone in this belief that people need to just f-u-c-k-i-n-g deal with it?!

This is the Yahoo Answers! policy I just inadvertantly learned. I happened to use all upper case--great for easy reading. They can't just remain in the background--they must intrude their egos into the process. Using all capitals is not necessarily rude. If it were perceived as shouting that is something it's true-- but not necessarily. And what about the right to be rude by intention? And what about the rudeness of stopping someone from posting? Like subjugation to a machine isn't abusive enough for Poor Man (and Poor Woman)--add a little sh--ty arrogance to it? The people who think this is cool to do are literally damned but saying so will not be understood.
