Think before you speak. I know it's an old cliche, but the fact is, people nowadays tend to think you are stupid if you don't answer very quickly. Or perhaps you did not hear what they asked. But if you make it a habit to pause and reflect, people will eventually recognize that it is your style, and accept it.

And why is it important? Because when you don't think first, many times you will reveal things which are better left unsaid, or say things in an undiplomatic way, or otherwise regret having said what you did. Giving yourself a few seconds to "rehearse" the answer in your own mind will go a long way to prevent these errors. This is especially true when someone is asking for information about a third person. Should you in fact say that is for them to tell you, not me?

My Steve had a few stock phrases he used to fill in the empty spaces. "That's not for me to say," when asked something about someone else, or asked an opinion he does not want to share. "I don't know how to answer that" is more honest than "I don't know" but more polite than "None of your business."

put rubber mats down when your 6yr old decides to eat their cereal in the lounge
would save spending hours scrubbing chocolate milk out of the carpets afterwards

Well I have two:

1) Always tell the people you love that you love them every day

2) Always make sure the toilet seat is down before you sit down!
