That's a difficult one. If I havn't the money then of course I can't. But if I do have a couple of quid left I do like to leave a tip - only if it is worth it though. Just give from the heart not guilt that is the best thing to do I think.

Frequently in the US, hairdressers rent their stalls from the owner of the shop, They agree to the standard fees for service. Sometimes a certain percentage of what they make goes goes to management. Other times they just rent outright.
I tip because I appreciate their services.
As for restaurants, I tip because start wage for a runner or a waitress is below minimum wage, unless you work fast food. The employers expect the staff to make the low wage up with tips. BTW Tips are frequently divided between the kitchen staff-busboys, salad prep and they are TAXED. Yet good waitress can make a living.

I live in Australia, about the only places we tip here are some restaurants, and sometimes pizza delivery. Generally though, it's not expected because the wages aren't that low (where a tip is needed to make up the shortfall). Sometimes I'll tip in a restaurant but not if the tips all get shared out, because that's not fair to those who go the extra mile to provide good service, they only get the same as people who think near enough is good enough. I wouldn't tip a hairdresser though, half the time I can barely afford the haircut and I hate it lol!

You need to remember that both the Hairdresser and the waiter or waitress make way less than min wage.... This is do to the tips they are getting (or not).... A hairdresser usually will be renting the space, paying the owner for the products and what they make on tips is what really makes up there pay... So the next time you are sitting there in a restaurant or at the hairdressers think if you where them how would you feel after all that work and time and no tip.....I always feel put yourself in the other person shoes and see how it would be what would you expect.........Then you will have your answer....

YES. i ALWAYS tip. to me its just the polite thing to do, and i always calculate in a tip to the over all price so that when i am getting the money together to go out or to get my hair or nails done. as for restaurants its at lest 15% of the bill, but i always tip more than that, as for hairdressers, ect. i tip $10-$20 (but i have been told that i tip to much)

Yes...these people are paid less then minimum wage due to the fact that they rely heavily on their tips.....it also helps to set up a nice relationship with your hairdresser if you plan on going to to same place...she/he will take care of you on future visits...the same for a waiter/waitress....they will see that you are seated at a nice table..that your food is served promptly and the way you like it....I know people that have worked at restaurants...and the stories that you hear about extra "stuff" in your food is true...if they don't care for you...watch out....it's sad but it's the truth....if you knew what went on in the kitchens of restaurants..you wouldn't eat out as much as you do....you can also go on line and go under license and inspections , fda, websites like this will give you a list of all the food and or restaurants in your area ..they will give you a list of all the violations that were found ....you'll see everything from rat/mouse droppings to red cockroaches...food that is refrigerated at the wrong temp. allowing bacteria...etc..... it's definitely an eye opener..

I tip 10% in a restaurant , sometimes more , but only if the service is good or at least acceptable . Hairdresser - yes , usually 2£ , but then I only go there twice a year , so that's not so bad .

YOU SHOULD TIP! I give my hairdresser more of a tip then a waiter/waitress. The hair dresser went to school in order to be in their profession. Not everyone can do it with skill.
I have only stiffed a waiter once! The service was horrible! We were ignored and over charged.

I'd only tip at restaurants because they usually make very little working as a waitress and they always get hit on by jerks who call themselves 'men' . Also, I would never ever tip a hairstylist unless I had the money and they did a very good job because sometimes they mess it up. and for what i'm paying it better be good.

If you get good service it's customary. If you really like your hairdresser, as I do, I add a few extra dollars to show my appreciation. If you can't afford to then you can't afford to. Some places charge a phenomenal amount of money which I would consider tip included. One thing to consider is if they don't own the shop, a large share of their money collected goes to the "house" not to them so the tips supplement their income, like waitstaff at a restaurant.
