Why is it more polite to say "May I?" vs "Can I?"

I just received my year-end bonus check and would like to send something as a gesture of "thanks" to a group of 8 people in a regional office that support my activity in the field. I did the fruit/ candy/nut baskets last year. My counter-part did the fancy popcorn from Chicago last year. I want to spend around $100-$150 a) Feel free to suggest group or individual items. b) If you're a big thinker, my counter-part and I can pool our money and spend more.

I gave my friend a check for $100 to pay for an event ticket last March. Well, she lost it and never cashed it, but didn't tell me until today. I can't afford $100 right now! I recently moved and started a new job and I'm totally broke. Does she have the right to cash it?

My neighbor has been borrowing chairs from me for his informal dinner parties, but never bothered to gesture or ask if I would like to join them. I find it very rude and annoying, but I wonder if this is simply a cultural difference? Thank you.

I am doing lights for a church play tomight, I've never done it before, my instructor will not be there. this all would be fine but the people doing the play made me really uncomfortable by asking me if I'd ever done it before and I said no, then they were like"well alot of people have put alot work into this play" if they start riding me tonight cause I mess up, should I just tell them off and walk away, or should I just let them ride me?

ALL I want is pleasure from this married man. I feel intense passion towards him and I know he feels the same by the way he looks at me. There is definitely chemistry.

And No I am not desperate. As far as hes concerned - he has no idea how much I want him.

And how can I be wrecking his wife and kids - THEY WONT FIND OUT.

It bothers me to no end when my mexican co-worker just starts talking in spanish. I don't want to hear it. I work in a medium to large size office with cubicles. Everytime I I hear him talk to another co-worker who speaks spanish, I get so angry I start to punch my desk. When he is on the phone or being serious, it usually doesn't bother me as much. But sometimes, I think he does it right in front of me because he knows it upsets me. Then he will come to my desk to ask me a question and speak in spanish and smile. I don't know how to speak it at all. I really just want to take the keyboard and hit him along side his head. I absolutely, positively, beyond the shadow of a doubt, cannot deal with hispanic people who were born here and speak enaglish but speak spanish to hide things or to just aggrivate people like me. Is this a normal reaction?

I read a news report today about a man who fired a Flare Gun at the young mother and her daughter in the Pensecola, FL area yesterday. The 3rd such incident since last Friday in the area. I've gotten pretty steamed while driving, people who follow too closely, people who drive to slowly. But what really tends to get me is the Aggressive Drivers. You know who they are, the ones who weave in and out of traffic at break neck speeds, while tailgating the car in front of them to intimidate the driver to speed up so they can pass. The ones who recklessly change lanes with no signals while on their cellphone and sending a text message! For godsakes, where ever your going at near the speed of light and with no regard for other human life is still going to be there even if you get there in 10 seconds or 10 minutes from now. Slow down and take it easy.

Should I do this cheerleading skit?
I am a 8th grade English teacher and for our winter sports pep rally they asked about 5 of the teachers to perform a skit with the 7th and 8th grade cheerleaders. Its supposed to be in fun but part of the skit is to lift the cheerleader up high. This might sound crazy but I am a little uncomfortable putting my hand on a cheerleaders butt. I know she will be wearing shorts underneath but still. Is this a little weird or am I out of line thinking its weird?

I stand up. Since it is such a personal question I just found out, at age 27, that some people do it another way. I was informed after asking a friend about it after hearing a joke about people who stand up. Is standing up uncommon? I know this is a stupid question.

...(sorry, ran out of characters)...and they can't bother themselves to choose a Best Answer??? Then it goes into the Voting void full of tied votes and you've pretty much just wasted your time trying to be helpful to that person? (other than the 2 points) I would think that most people answer with the hope of being chosen as Best Answer. Even if your's isn't chosen though, it's just a simple courtesy.
