Should I do this cheerleading skit?
I am a 8th grade English teacher and for our winter sports pep rally they asked about 5 of the teachers to perform a skit with the 7th and 8th grade cheerleaders. Its supposed to be in fun but part of the skit is to lift the cheerleader up high. This might sound crazy but I am a little uncomfortable putting my hand on a cheerleaders butt. I know she will be wearing shorts underneath but still. Is this a little weird or am I out of line thinking its weird?

As a past high school and college cheerleader, and current coach, it is not uncommon for a lift to be performed this way; however, it would be inappropriate in this case.

I assume that you have not been given any formal training in cheerleading stunting, and if this is the case, the stunt may be misconstrued in the public eye. Teachers and students in compromising positions, even if innocent, are frowned upon.

Perhaps you could change the skit to incorporate a shoulder stand. At the most, you would lunge forward with your right leg and be grabbing the young girls hands as she uses her right leg to step up onto your right thigh. With spotter on 3 sides, she would then swing her left leg over to your left shoulder (while you are still holding her hands). The back base should grab her tightly by the calf area. she could then let go and do a High v motion while you placed your hands on the back of her ankles for extra stablization. to dismount she would simply grab your hands and jump forward while you grab her waist to cushion the impact going down.

This move would give you the height you are looking for without the "talk or lawsuit" that I certainly think you don't need! Seems strange that this type of function would even be considered.

Best of luck to you with your decision.

If the situation makes you uncomfortable, you have every right to refuse. With all that is going on today in regards to inappropriate contact between students and teachers, I have to question why you were asked to do this in the first place. Although I'm sure you have no bad intentions whatsoever in regards to the cheerleader, in today's society there is always someone who will take things the wrong way. You need to decide if the benefits outweigh the risks.

No, you're not weird. I have mixed feelings on this, on one side, it is fairly innocent, you didn't come up with the skit so you could grope a minor and stunts like this are common in cheer-leading. On the other hand, I'd be uncomfortable with either doing it or having my daughter being held up in such a manner.

In the military, officers are not allowed to touch enlisted people. Our Master at Arms was a Warrent Officer, and he worried about an event where he grabbed an enlisted person and put him on report. He should have had the enlisted MAA do it.

I think a teacher with his hand on a student's butt is much worse.
