We've never attended a bar mitzvah and aren't sure of how much to put in the envelope. It'll just be myself & husband attending. Helllllp! Thanks:)

i would say you treat this like a wedding, because they throw lavish parties where everyone dresses up and what not. My cousins had evening bar mitzvah's and i would say it is comparison to an evening wedding, but i had friends who had one when i was 13 and it was in the day time, and it was less fancy, so i would say less money, still in a nice place though. Maybe 100.00 a plate if you can, if not, think about the place they are having it and depending on how much you think the plate will be ya know, use that as your guide. when i am broke, i usually give like 75 per plate. but if i have a little money i give 100 per plate. Whatever you can afford i am sure would be ok.

do not think of of it as a Bar Mitzvah present, yet in basic terms a present. Is the boy into Boggle or different word video games? If not, i might think of of something else to grant to him. If he's, then it particularly is an appropriate present.

The number 18 (chai) is lucky. Give $18 or a multiple of $18 (double chai, triple chai, etc) depending on your budget. We often write two checks-one for $18 to spend now, and one for $36 to save for later.
