Many years ago I was teaching in Surrey. The mother of two of our nicer pupils died and I was appalled to hear fellow teachers saying, 'Why that family, they're so nice? Why couldn't it have been Mrs. D.?' Now the D family were living at existence level and had several very young children. I was absolutely disgusted with my colleagues.

Death is hard for some people. I mean it happens to us all but some have a very strong reaction to it. I reckon that the peopleyou know who said this are trying to find something to say when there really isnt. Not in a nasty way, I dont think that phrases like that are meant hurtfully, I beleive that its hard to know what to say..sort of along the lines of
'they had a good innings' or such like.
I really dont think you should judge these people too harshly or think too deeply about the meaning of it. Sometimes people are at a loss as to what the say and feel the need to fill the silence with something in order to cover up their inadaquacy in this area.
Perfectly human I'm afraid

There is always something nice one can say about another person, living or dead, but it is much more difficult to think of some nice comment to make of a person who has recently died, most people are out of their depth for correct words Emotions can confuse the issue.

I have never heard anyone say this. I have heard them say they were such good people even when they were total jerks.

At funerals or when talking with friends about someone who just died, we often find it difficult to think of something appropriate to say. There are cliche's for everything.
The commonest cliche's for describing persons who recently died are nice remarks about their character and appearance.

I have never said of a dead person that they were attractive when alive. I have never heard anyone else say it either. Usually it's more how good a person he or she was and more lies like that.

It's one of those things that people say without thinking of what they are saying.
