Etiquette - February 2007

My family lives in a very quiet, close-knit neighborhood (everyone in the cul-de-sac has lived here for over 15 years). These new neighbors moved into a house recently, and to put it lightly, they are neighbors from hell. Young punk kids, parties all the time, trash in my yard, our friends' yards, in the street. Beer cans everywhere. Motorcycles, loud cars with annoying mufflers or lack thereof. I'm sick of it, and so are my neighbors. We don't feel safe having our children outside anymore because of these dirt bags who feel it is necessary to drive 45 in their cars and on their bikes into the cul de sac. It sickens me. Is there anything we can do to get them to forcibly move? I am seriously at a snapping point, and if it weren't for my wife and our young boy, I'd have no problem physically smashing their junk and getting physical with these jerks. If anyone knows of anything civil we can do (neighborhood petition, etc.), please let me know before I lose my self control.

When you are with a woman and want to hold the door open for her, what is the correct way to do it if the door is a "push" door? Do you go through first and hold it for her? What happened to ladies first?

Why do certain people live like trash? I'm talking about the people with 15 cars and 45 tires in the driveway, old rusty toys and tools laying all over the lawn, and broken borded up windows. If you are sloppy, then fine, keep it indoors. I understand being poor, I have been myself. But that's no excuse to keep your parade of filth on display. These people disgust me. They aren't the only ones who have to live with it. The whole neighborhood does!

Everywhere I go, I see people leaving carts in parking lots taking up parking spaces and cluttering up the place. Why are people too lazy to put them away or take them back into the store?

I'm in ROTC & took a quarter off from ROTC-not school, to learn to master school priorities better & find way to feel more comfortable with college life etc.Well, I hang out with my ROTC buds here and there-I live at home, so I can drive down to campus, but they live in the dorms & can't-so it's not like we hang out 24/7-but we hang out. Any who,so a buddy of mine from ROTC, called to see if I wanted to go to this party an upperclassmen is having-they are both ROTC,I know the chick , she is pretty cool. I missed his call, so as soon as I got the message I called him back. I told him thanks for the invite, but I'm at home, because I don't feel well, and to tell everyone I said hey. I just didn't feel comfortable going, since I'm not doing ROTC this quarter and don't know the uppers too well. I also kind of think about an upper guy a lot, who is friends with the chick & I was afraid he might be there. I just don't want to miss out, because I didn't go.

You've seen it. At the mall or at the movies.

Like while you're watching the movies, you hear a black person giving play-play commentary:
"Damn n!gga, don't let that muthaf*cka go inside that house! Oh dayyyummm -- you alright n!gga, you alright, just brush that dirt off yo shouldas!!! Ain't no thang but a chicken wang! AHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no he didn't!!!"

Or answering the cellphone in the theaters:

"*Ring* (top 20 hiphop ringtone)
Yeah, whattup?
Naw, we at the movies.
Yeah.
Just me, Tyrone, Dayshawn and them.
Aiight.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah n!gga.
Aiight.
Uh-huh.
Coo.
Yeah we gon' be there.
No doubt.
Aiight coo.
Peace. Late."

And that may go on for a good 5 minutes.

At my college certain blacks sit in a section of campus and just get loud and sometimes make fun of people's clothes as they walk by.

Why do you tend to see black people act loud and rude in public?

And yes, I know any race can act ignorant, but it seems to be more pronounced with blac

I have. At my last job, we were taking roll call, and a Korean girl was standing in front of me, and all of a sudden she hunched over. A couple people looked over and said "what happened? does she have to take a s--t?" She just hunched over with her han on one knee with a pained look on her face. One of her girl friends made fun of her, saying "she has a turtle head!" Her other girl friend was laughing the whole time. I was watching quietly but I was sadistically enjoying seeing her in pain and probably embarrassment and humiliation as well. Eventually she ran to the restroom to avoid a greater humiliation. Before you get mad at me -- the reason I was enjoying it, was because a few weeks earlier I was going to the restroom all day because I had diarrhea -- you know, something everyone has once in a while. This same girl told me I was "disgusting." So that's why I enjoyed seeing her in her predicament.

So my other question is, was I wrong for enjoying seeing her in this state?

And she always gives me and the other woman I work with dirty looks. She always looks like she is angry and she slams the desk draws and cabinets and telephone. When she intercoms you, you can hear her huffing and puffing because she is annoyed. How do you deal with someone like this????

When you are asked if you need help bagging at the supermarket, is it alright to say "No, thank you. I'm fine." or "I rather do it by myself."

I don't want to be rude, but lots of people who put the groceries in the bag put the hot things with cold things, etc., and I prefer to do it on my own. Is it rude? What do you do? If you have ever worked at a supermarket bagging the groceries, would you mind?

He is a pathological liar, master bullshitter and very obnoxious. Everyone else despises him, too. But they are mean to him. So he hangs out with me MORE. What can I do? I don't want to be rude. But I don't think I can take this any longer. He's also not above backstabbing, taking credit for my work, etc.

Trying to get my housemate to stop smoking in the house, she makes everything stink! Is that rude, from a smokers point of view? Also would you sit down next to someone out side maybe at a bus stop without asking if they minded? I'm always having to get up and move! What is you opinion?

I have been asked to a REAL Chinese food New Year's Day Dinner by a Chinese worker that I work with, at his house. I am Caucasian and do not know the traditions of the meal and event. What should I bring to the dinner as a gift, Chinese wine? Jelly belly's? suggestions? Language is a real barrier, since they speak only the barest of English, but I am more up to that challenge than am I eating food that I can not identify. I am honored to have been invited and do not want to offend them with my clumsiness. I really need some help here.
