they ask you if you have anything to drink because they need to satisfy their thirst.

There are various reasons that someone might ask you if you have something to drink. One is very simple. The person might like something, usually other than water, and they ask you because they hope you have soda pop, juice, alcoholic drinks, etc. There is nothing wrong with asking. I'd rather the question rather the assumption, wouldn't you? Anyway, usually people don't have the honesty or the respect to ask. You have someone who feels comfortable with you and that is why they asked you. Remember this, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31. Peace and God Bless.

If they've been at your house for awhile, and you never offered anything, its because they are thirsty. I always beat people to the punch. After friends stop over and get comfy (within 15 minutes), I ask "Would you like anything to drink? I have bottled water, juice, milk, beer, coffee, and tea." Then I serve their preferences. I would expect the same at their house.

Seriously, I think it is a reminder to you that they are your guests and you are the hostess. Try asking them first, usually they will tell you no and saves you the trouble. If you forget, everyone might want something to drink after a while...Say hello to the dishes once your company leaves.

actually it seems the most (polite) subtle way to ask for a drink rather than ask outright. Maybe better to offer first, before being asked?

it's etiquette for you to serve them a drink when someone comes to your home (serve them coffee, soda, juice, water...tell them what you have in your frig; ask them what they would like to have). If you have forgotten to ask them and they are thirsty it's appropriate for them to ask you. If your frig is bare, then offer water and apologize saying that's all you have.

They ask it like that because it's a polite way to ask rather than "Can I have a drink" It's like asking "do you have a bathroom I can use?" Well of course you do.
RIGHT?

because it sounds rude if they just say "get me a drink" or if they get it themselves.
