When you are asked if you need help bagging at the supermarket, is it alright to say "No, thank you. I'm fine." or "I rather do it by myself."

I don't want to be rude, but lots of people who put the groceries in the bag put the hot things with cold things, etc., and I prefer to do it on my own. Is it rude? What do you do? If you have ever worked at a supermarket bagging the groceries, would you mind?

No its not rude you can say, "no thank you" or "no, I'd rather do it myself"... they'll busy themself checking out the next person while you bag your groceries.

I've worked at a grocery store before... but we always bagged the groceries (correctly - no hot things with cold thngs, meats in seperate bags, cleaners in seperate bags, fruits & veggies with other fruits and veggies, boxed items with other boxed items, fridge items with other fridge items)... the cashier did the bagging and the cash. The customer rarely did any bagging, but some did.

I've worked at a grocery store and would not take offense to this, so it should be fine. You could also suggest to the manager to re-teach them how to bag the groceries if they are doing it correctly. I've worked at a place where I've always done it correctly.

Lol, you know I feel this way too.

Two weeks ago when I went to the grocery store, there were young boys helping to pack people's grocery, hoping to raise money for their football team.

When I got to the checkout, I was not even asked if I wanted by shopping packed for me, the person just went ahead.

I kept quiet, but when I got home, I found soap and toothpaste in with my yogurts. I was not impressed.

I phoned the supermarket up, and kindly complained - pointing out my grieviance.

I also put forward, that it made shoppers feel awquard to refuse.

A few days later, I received a letter with a £10 gift voucher in it, apologising for my dilemna. I was assured that the matter would be put right in future.

I like to do my own bag packing too.

I actually never thought about that! Well, I'm French, and in France, they don't help you do it anyway (well, sometimes, but it's very unusual and only done in a few shops)! But in England, where I live now, it's the person who is at the cash register who asks you, and I always do it myself. I don't know, I would feel embarassed having someone packed the things for me! I'm not handicapped! I'm sure they are grateful when you say no! Less things to do! And, yes, I'm the same: I like to separate things - it's easier when I unpack at home.

It's their job to ask. As long as you are cordial and respectful, there is no obligation to take them up on the offer. I completely agree with your desire to bag my own groceries. I know what items I like to store together in my home, and I also like to keep perishables together, cold items together, etc. Remember, you're the customer!

You can say no thank you I've got it........and that's less work for the person and you haven't been rude.....if the person continues to help you bag say something like "oh no really it's ok because i need to seperate these they're not all mine" or make up something like that....

I used to bag groceries when I was 16. There were several people who preferred to do it themselves. They asked and we let them, no big deal

it's not rude at all. what I can't stand is when they use a bag for only 2 items where they can fit 12.

but I'd rather say a polite "no thanks" than fix the problem after they did the bagging for me.

As long as you are polite and say it with a smile in your voice they shouldn't have a problem. Don't make a big deal out of it, just start bagging.

No, it's not rude. They're there to help you, but only if you want help. I often pack my own bags, for the same reason as you.

Let the person do their job or are you happy to see more people out of work and collecting government assistance cheques?

If the bagger is not doing a proper job of things, speak to a manager and suggest the bagger be instructed on how to pack things correctly.
