Etiquette - January 2007

A lot of television shows and movies (predominantly American from what I've noticed) have characters that simply hang up the phone at the end of a conversation without signing off or saying good bye.

Just curious as to whether this is the norm in every day life as well?

Why do people give a thumbs down to others who got an answer correct and did it faster than you? If everyone but the last answerer got a thumbs down, we know who did it!!! Anyone else think it's silly?

Ok so I go to this private school and I am in the ninth grade, and many of the students there have been attending the school since elementary school. Its harder to form your own clique because most people have been in the same one for a while-years, and it can make me feel left out at times. My grade is not really large, and most of my close friends are in different groups(not all freshmen). I am in this clique right now, where mostly everyone is sweet, but there are some people-all they talk about is gossip and fashions and school. I'm not really that kind of person and for some reason I can't stand people who are always gossiping about others enlessly(I dont care who it is), because it gets boring after a while. I don't want to be rude either...so can I have a few good suggestions? Thanks.
ps-my grade has about 125 people

My husband's ex-wife and their three adult children's mother/grandmother has died of cancer. I would like to pay my respects properly and send them (ex-wife and children) a condolences card. I wish to learn the appropriate words to say to them. I don't want to make the text too short nor too long. What would be sufficient?
Please, I search for serious responses. Thanks.

My bf and I live on the third floor of a student apartment building. There is another couple who lives two floors below us. My bf is a guitar player and has both accoustic and electric. a little time after they moved in, the man started coming up here and complaining that the bass was too loud. I could not hear it in the other room, but I figured maybe it traveled through the floor better than the wall. So bf started playing his music only in the day time, well before quiet hours. Still the man comes up here and says that the bass is too loud and is going to hurt his fiancee's baby. (shes about five months along) It's gotten to where I' terrified every time bf turns on his guitar. The couple is also friends with the landlord, and so not only are they getting mad, the landlord is also getting angry. Is there anything we can do to help muffle the bass? Will it hurt the baby? (They are both smokers and I am not one to point a finger, but I would be more concerned about that)

i live in a rural community where you always are running into someone that you know. i have two situations

1- i see someone from school that i know but was not friends with but i know their name or face
2- i see someone i hung out with in school but we did not stay friends after graduation

sometimes i say hi or i don't say anything because i normally don't recall names just faces. i know folks remember me but if they don't say anything neither do i.

i know that is rude but i have no idea what to say. i don't want to tell them my buisness but i do think i should say hello or something. what is the polite thing to do?

I am not getting married anytime soon; but If I was, I wouldn't want any of the traditional gifts that guests often give (towels, kitchen electronics, crystal, etc.) Although those things are nice, a donation into an account or towards a down payment on a house would be much more useful and smart. How do you word this on an invitation or is it extremely rude to even be choosey over your gift?

In this age of heightened focus on hygiene many coworkers realize that not everybody washes their hands after going to the bathroom. Since most bathroom doors open inwards they end up using a paper towel to open the door. Some bathrooms have a trash can by the door, but if one isn't there some folks throw the towel on the floor (although some do take it with them and dispose of it properly).

It seems to me that this problem - as well as an easier exit in case of emergency (e.g. fire) would be obviated if the door simply opened outwards.

While it wouldn't be good to have a door open outwards directly into a hallway (I can see the Dilbert cartoon for that already) the door could be positioned within a cove or an indentation so it wouldn't swing into a hallway.

Any ideas why this isn't done (at least that I've seen)?

I am 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. Lately I have discovered masturbating and have been doing it quite frequently. I dont have much privacy because I have 5 sisters so I often go downstairs to my basement and take off all my clothes and masturbate. I often download pictures off the internet of Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and others and just masturbate to them. Is that normal? Otherwise I often will just sit nude on my recliner and masturbate to girls in my high school bent over with a skirt and no panties on. I love butts. Anyway, is it wrong to do this? I almost got caught the other day by my sister Dawn. I dont want to get ridiculed for this in case I do ever get caught
