i would say,when talking to others,talk about what they like,it's always a party pleaser.people enjoy talking about themselves best.and now you are a good listener.i also like to talk about music and movies.

If I'm going to a party where I do not know alot of people, I always check out the front pages of USA Today for topics to start up conversations. Another good conversation starter is to get the listener talking about themselves and then act fascinated

Sports would be the best for me but I think it really depends on the hobbies of the person having the conversation, it's always fun to chat about what you like.

For me: children and family, education, the news (but no Politics), food and wine, good deeds, goals in life, travel (that's always interesting), entertainment (movies, tv shows)...
It depends on who your talking to: I wont discuss the latest rap group with my grand-father, or I wont talk about my last visit to the Historical museum to my 4year old nephew...hi hi
I always try to pick a subject that I know wont cause disagreament and dispute..

Movies or TV are usually safe with anyone.
A lot of times it's easy to just talk about the situation you're in: the place, the people, the situation itself.
