My bf and I live on the third floor of a student apartment building. There is another couple who lives two floors below us. My bf is a guitar player and has both accoustic and electric. a little time after they moved in, the man started coming up here and complaining that the bass was too loud. I could not hear it in the other room, but I figured maybe it traveled through the floor better than the wall. So bf started playing his music only in the day time, well before quiet hours. Still the man comes up here and says that the bass is too loud and is going to hurt his fiancee's baby. (shes about five months along) It's gotten to where I' terrified every time bf turns on his guitar. The couple is also friends with the landlord, and so not only are they getting mad, the landlord is also getting angry. Is there anything we can do to help muffle the bass? Will it hurt the baby? (They are both smokers and I am not one to point a finger, but I would be more concerned about that)

I realized that last sentance was a bit of a jab. Mr. downstairs had just come up. bf isn't even here, and I'm sitting in apartment with nothing on but my computer. So I was a bit fustrated.

You may want to (a) start looking for a new place to live and (b) re-assess your rental agreement. Many places have addendums or sub-lines that state that no "entertainment" noise (i.e., radio, tv, etc) is to be heard outside of the apartment unit. However, you may also want to wander down to your neighbor's apartment and stand outside the door and listen while your BF plays his guitar to see if you can hear anything. Since he came complaining and there was no noise being made (so it obviously wasn't you) the noise might be coming from someplace else.

Try maybe placing the amp on the bed or sofa/chair or some other piece of furniture that has a lot of padding and batting to muffle the thump.

FYI: the loud noise will NOT harm the fetus. It is well insulated inside a big ol' bag of water. Their smoking is WAY, WAY, WAY more harmful than even a full-blown rock concert would be!! Hypocrites!!

if the guy is coming upstairs and complaining about the bass when your bf isn't home, I'd say he's trying to cause trouble. I know you said he and landlord are friends, but I'd talk to the landlord. I think you guys have done everything you can. Sounds like nothing will make that guy happy.

Uh, did you explain to him that you weren't even listening to music and the sound must have been coming from somewhere else?

You could try talking to the landlord.

The only other suggestions are to put padding on the floor, or to move.

He's full of it, about hurting the baby, btw. That's just nuts.

the music can't hurt the baby and if you are doing it before quite hrs you are with in your right. Lay down some carpet it will help muffle the sound and try to keep the volume down

Sorry, but your BF shouldn't be playing an amped guitar in an apartment. That's all there is to it. He can practice without the amp on or find a rehearsal studio.
