Ok so I go to this private school and I am in the ninth grade, and many of the students there have been attending the school since elementary school. Its harder to form your own clique because most people have been in the same one for a while-years, and it can make me feel left out at times. My grade is not really large, and most of my close friends are in different groups(not all freshmen). I am in this clique right now, where mostly everyone is sweet, but there are some people-all they talk about is gossip and fashions and school. I'm not really that kind of person and for some reason I can't stand people who are always gossiping about others enlessly(I dont care who it is), because it gets boring after a while. I don't want to be rude either...so can I have a few good suggestions? Thanks.
ps-my grade has about 125 people

Cliques....I was never in a clique in high school, and I was still popular. I hung out with everyone. I couldn't stand it when people only hung out with certain people. Hang out with all the other people who don't hang in cliques. Don't be someone you are not. You don't want to be defined by who you hang out with.

Cliques are LAME. the coolest people are the ones who can drift into and out of any group and be fine. Stick around for what you enjoy, and excuse yourself when the gossip starts. Don't worry so much about fitting in with a clique and you may just grow up to be someone who is independent, smart and worth knowing.

First of all, we have the same avatar! How cool.

Second of all, I'm 26 and have been there and done that. If I could write a letter to myself in 9th grade, it would go as follows:

Dear Lizzie,

Stay true to yourself and what makes you happy. Trying to fit in and being with the cool people isn't what will make you a better person in the future. You'll smoke for 8 years and you'll get 2 tattoos that you'll forever regret. You love singing and acting, so you should just consume yourself with that. Who cares if you think they laugh at you, that's their problem! Once you get to college, NONE of this will matter. Just participate in the activities that you know will fulfill you and the rest will fall into place. Besides, the people you think are cool now, half will end up not going to college, some will get pregnant, and some will drop out of school. Just keep your eye on the prize and do what makes YOU happy, not everyone else. You're the one who matters most.

I'd say just do what interests you. If you want to be on the year book, play a sport or be in a play then just do it. You'll make new friends doing what you like. Be in what ever organization it is that you want to be in regardless of who is in it. This group can be in school or out of school.

Their is no reason to sever ties with the friends you already have. Keep them! Everyone can use friends! Just don't be close minded to making new friends and don't be scared to hang out with them.

You are GROWING UP! Congratulations.

Don't drop the present friends but make room for some new friends with common interests -- even if he or she isn't a member of a clique.

you don't have to completely cut your old clique out of your social life....it's not like you have to make a "clean break" if you want to find a new group of friends....and you don't have to be apologetic for wanting to widen your social circle....just start hangin with your new friends and remain friendly with your old friends...
good luck
