dont give it to her.

i learned from experience. when i got my first place, mom and dad gave me some money, and i wasted it.

just hold it back and see how she does on her own. maybe give her 100 dollars for a little extra cash. but hold onto the 1000 for now. then when and if she gets into a bit of trouble you can give it to her to help her out. and if she makes it on her own for a year, then give it to her and feel confident that she will save it for when it is needed.

I have three kids and I learned fast that if you offer the gift up front you will be teaching them to come to you for every little thing. They will want to spend their money on entertainment while hitting you up to pay their bills. Hold off. Just give her a little to help pay some of her move in bills as they come. Let her find out and learn to use and budget the money that she has or is earning herself. In the long run she will thank you when she is independent and can survive without help. Save the thousand for the future when she might need some help with a down payment for a house or condo.

Exchange it into pounds so I could spend it on something I really want.

Actually I was given a thousand pounds for my 21st birthday by a wealthy uncle, which was so much money to me. I spent about half on paying off debt, and the rest on a new bed and some other bits and bobs for my new flat at the time.

Now I look back I can't believe I was that sensible, because I now feel life's too short and would choose to spend a windfall on something fun and memorable, like a holiday.

Dunno if that helps!

--Regarding your gift: I'd make sure she wasn't in any debt or in any trouble first, make sure her bills are clean as regards bills and expenses first...

And in terms of the gift, I'd likely not give it to her in cash, but instead give it as a prepaid gift card, or access to a savings account where you can *watch* what she does with the gift. I'm not saying you can't trust her, ok, but $1,000 will go quickly if you just turn your back on her and let her party it away. Some slack is to be expected, just not for the whole thing.

--If you were to give it to me, I'd get caught up with bills and debts, which would take the first half of it. I know, I'm sorry, I'm lame that way....

And the rest would go towards a gym membership or a fitness class or three so I can lose some weight and get myself healthy again. Or I might cut a corner, get some workout gear for my home, and use what I save to get a new bed or futon, as the bed I have is nine kinds of messed up....

And that would be about it. Thanks for your time!

If you gave me $1000.00, I'd use it to pay for a state professional licensing exam test, my licensing fees and a study guide for the test. The rest I'd put toward my student loans. But that's what I could use some extra money for right now- when my parents gave me money to help me when I was moving out, I used the money for some furniture, some of which I still have.

Well buy her something the could make her creative and visionary as a child. Drawing set might be a nice idea for a best gift. Give her something that could make her use her imaginations instead of watching TV. :D

Hmm... in your daughters situation I would likley use it for rent (if I needed to) or to buy food or furnature for the apartment. For myself, I would pay of some college and buy a new wardrobe to replace the clothes I am wearing out.

I would pay off my VISA card, a mere $350.00 and with the rest I would buy my 5 year old son a bed with drawers underneath and matching dresser. And of course I would send you a thank you note!

If I had that money I would for sure be spending it on school because school is draining my bank account like you can't even believe.
