Toddler & Preschooler - February 2007

She has always slept through the night 11 or 12 hours since she was 3 months and slept by herself in her crib and room since she was 2 1/2 months, but she would wake up but go back to sleep on her own with no problems. Now she wakes up to two times crying and it takes us up to two hours to get her back to sleep. As soon as we go in and get her she stops crying so I dont think it's teething. I also thought it was becuase we just had a baby but she loves her baby brother and always wants to love on him, he really doesn't seem t affect her at all which suprised me. She also started fighting me to put her down for her nap and bedtime. She cries and screams to where I just want to give up and let her ware herself out. My husband and I are late owls so she started going to bed at 11 pm on her own since she was 3 months. I know it's a late bedtime but atleast she had the same routine every night with no problems, her nap time was always by 2 pm. What happened and will she ever go back

My 3 year old daughter has been taking gymnastics classes for about 6 months. She loves it. Two weeks ago, a little girl started in her class who has taken a liking to my daughter. This girl is very clingy, touchy, and wants to hold my daughters hand all the time. Now, this is OK, except, my daughter is NOT into it and get's really annoyed and whiney when she doesn't get left alone. Last week, because the two of them were fighting, they were both asked to leave class early. I have tried to talk with the Mother, but she thinks its cute that her daughter likes my daughter and can't see the issue. My daughter doesn't want to go anymore.

Should I make her work through this (I feel bad about this, but I hate to take away gymnastics when I know she likes it).

Or...Should I just take her out of the class completely? The new girl isn't going anywhere.

Other ideas?

I know a 1st birthday is really for adults more than the child as they really dont know what is going on, but i would love some ideas anyway. I am not interested in playing games and we are having a BBQ for lunch so it is really just a social gathering to celebrate it. Any ideas for a cake or few other things that my non creative mind has not thought of?

Thank you in Advance

My 4yr. old talked up a storm at 15 months old. This child only says roughly 20 to 30 words. She talks but makes no sense yet. She does not even respond when I ask "What's this?" She grunts and cries when she wants something. I try to make her ask me but to no avail. Temper tantrums are a big part of her life. She seems like a normal child to me but speech delayed. I'd hate to get her labeled so soon. What do you think?

I guess from me being the parent that is so strict on my daughter and my husband being the lenient one, she is kinda afraid to ask me for things because she is afraid that I am going to fuss. Sometimes I might have been a little over the extreme to certain situations. I don't want us to have this type of relationship. How can I change this? My daughter is 6 years old. She is sort of afraid of me like if she brings home a bad note or if she needs something she will go ask someone to fix it or get it because of the reaction she might get from me. The only time I fuss is when she don't do what she is told.

I've read in alot of questions about parents giving their babies/toddlers juice and flavored milk. Juice even fruit juice contains a high amount of sugar that will rot your childs teeth even if they don't have any and even if it is watered down and the same for flavored milks. was just wondering about other parents views on juices and flavored milks for babies/toddlers as my 18month has never had either in his life and not planning on giving any until he is 5 and then only for treats once or twice a week... what do you think?

I do and I am always wrong.lol
We were driving in the car and she asked me what I was doing so I told her I was yawning. She said "No your not yawnin"
Then I told her it was getting dark out and she told me it wasnt. I am not concerned at all that this is abnormal. I know it is quite normal but does anyone understand why?
It seems to me it has something to do with her independence maybe.

She spends her weekdays between my parent's and my wife's parents who were both teachers. I feel she's got two very good resources to help her grow from an educational standpoint.

However, she does seem "a little" standoffish when interacting with other children her age. I just don't want her to get a late start developing socially. Should I be worried? Do you think enrolling her in preschool would help?

My cousin said her Aunt's baby, Faith has been running and talking since she was 4 months old. This just doesn't sound right to me and not only that, but she "claims" Annabella, my 14 month old niece, can't walk, talk, or even crawl! I think this has gone way too far!

When my son was 2, he would use the potty all the time. After a couple of months, he wouldn't use it anymore. He is now 3 and refuses to use the potty. He will only go into the bathroom for a bath and screams bloody murder when you try to get him to use the potty. Does anyone have any good tips?

I have two children and my youngest suddenly seems interested in the potty. She is only 22 months old. She barely talks but says "baby pee" and wants to sit on the potty etc. I think it is much to early for her to begin this. Am I right? My oldest daughter was completely trained at 2 1/2. Am I wasting my time even trying this? Do you suggest beginning the pullups? I've forgotten this part of life!

My 2 year old daughter asked for a snack so I was in the kitchen making it. Meanwhile, she opened the front door and our dog got out...she followed. By the time I brought her snack in the living room she was all the way down the street. I felt sick. To make matters worse my neighbor was leaving his house and saw the whole thing. Last summer we thought she had escaped again, because she wasn't anywhere to be found in the house. We ran outside panicked. The same neighbor helped looked for her. My son found her asleep UNDER her bed. Does this make me a horrible parent? It was so incredibly scary to see her walking down the street.

My son, his wife and 20month old are currently living with us. I am the full time child care person while everyone else works. This is a short term situation all the way around, maybe 6 months.
Alexis and I have fun, run errands, clean the house, etc. just like a stay at home mom would do. When my daughter in law is around, Alexis will have nothing to do with anyone else in the family including her dad. I realize a lot of that is normal but she gets really crappy if any of us even talk to her, unlike when Mom isn't around.
My thought, and I could be wrong, Mom doesn't interact with Alexis in a really "involved" way. She loves her to death but often just watches videos or cartoons with her. Seldom does any outside activities (it's warm here), no real one on one stuff. When Alexis wakes up in the morning, Mom drags around looking like death warmed over. Negative behavior for attention is what I think because Alexis isn't feeling the positive enough. What do you think?

We have an almost 2 year old son. He sometimes needs to 'cool down' a bit so we put him on the stairs. He sure feels this is not to amuse him and is happy if we get him to continue his nornal routine.

Now we have this 'problem': He leaves the room (sometimes even waves) closes the door behind him and goes to sit on the stairs..... and just sits there. When I come to get him he just smiles and gestures he wants to sit there and does not want to be picked up.

He can also go to his room and it is not any more tranquil there. So any idea to why and does this affects the idea behind the 'naughtyspot'?

My sons father hasn't paid child support in a year and a half and dosent help me take care of him. For a year i went to florida every 2 months so that my son could see his father but that started getting pretty expensive since i live in mississippi. His father has a 6 or 7 month old son and 2 step children and he takes care of his sister that is about 1 year old that he helps provide for on a day to day basis. When i ask him to help he tells me he can't and that to help me out for a little bit he can come get our son and give me a break for about a week. I amvery confused about what to do. I want my son to know his father and i dont want to be the bad guy in my sons eyes, and my son is wants to see his dad that is all he has talked about for the past week. He walks around the house asking me if its time to go to daddy's house yet and he even got his bag and started putting his toys in it telling me that he was ready to go to daddy's house. What should i do?

My daughter's will be having their second and thrid birthday parties together in 2 months. Their father and I have no clue what theme to use. I've asked both of our children what they want and they say "Dora, princess, spiderman, pablo(backyardigans), diego, superman, and frogs." They want to use nearly every party theme I have asked them about. I figured a princess party would be best but my husband disagrees. What do you think? I do know that we are having their party at a park. We will be having a cook-out.
