My 4yr. old talked up a storm at 15 months old. This child only says roughly 20 to 30 words. She talks but makes no sense yet. She does not even respond when I ask "What's this?" She grunts and cries when she wants something. I try to make her ask me but to no avail. Temper tantrums are a big part of her life. She seems like a normal child to me but speech delayed. I'd hate to get her labeled so soon. What do you think?

Hi my son was the same way. Only he would only say mama, dada and papa. He would grunt and whine for everything else. My sons doctor told me that my two older girls were doing all the talking for him, and when I sat down to think for a minute, he was right. Anything he wanted he went to them and they asked him by name if that's what he wanted and gave it to him or got me or my husband. My sons doctor recommended that we get him into speech therapy. Every state has free services like that for kids from birth to age 3. I live in Michigan and our program is called Early ON Michigan. So look into that and get him going. My son started 3 weeks before he turned 2 (that was in September of 06..) and now he is talking our ears off! Some of it is hard to understand.. but for the most part he is doing wonderful!

Alot of people are telling you he will grow out of it.. but I would recommend you get going and do something about it for two reasons, 1) chances are he WILL be delayed when he gets talking and will need special help in school.. and 2) so kids wont make fun of him when he gets into school...

Email me if you like to talk about this!
Good luck hon!

My Daughter is 27 months, and still only says about 20~30 words. I asked her Doctor if this was was a bad sign. The Doctor told me not to worry too much about it until the reach about four. If they don't start to really talk then they do test. But every child developes on there own so there is things that my daughter developed quicker in(just like your child I'm sure) talking is just taking some more time. I have found that some good preschool shows help. My daughter really likes Dora the Explorer, and after she sees an episode a couple of times, she starts to try to yell the words with Dora and Boots. She is coming along better now.
I hope this helped and reassured your mind!

Best of Luck, I trully hope she starts to talk soon!

My youngest just turned three. He literally can only say about 60 words that you can understand. But if you ask him to go get the blue car, or the yellow truck or what not he can do that. He can sign his ABC's, knows all his body parts and what not. He just won't talk. We are having him tested now but they just say he's speech delayed and nothing else. Sometimes they don't have to talk because we or an older sibling talk for them. I know when my three year old points to something my eight year old will jump and get it for him. My oldest was talking in full sentences before he was two. The Dr's aren't nearly as worried as I am. But I'm right there with you. As parents we tend to over worry sometimes.

i think every child develops at their own rate and 22months may be way too soon to get her checked by a specialist or labeled as you say, some babys don't even walk till they're 2 so maybe she is just taking her time, if she seems normaly to you then she's normal!! i think it's when you realize that not all children are the same when you have two completely different lol my little sisters were like that too one was way ahead of the other and now theyre both at school and theyre both above average in their classes, also my nephew didnt say a single word till he was 22months and then all of a sudden came out with cani please have some more mommy!! so she's just taking her time and taking it all in and one day will no doubt surprise you! good luck and have fun with your young ones :) xx

She'll talk in her own time. My daughter is 18 months and says about 10 words and does a lot of grunting. I can see it's building, but it's slow. Make sure you're reading a lot to her and ask her to point things out to you often. If she's comprehending what you're saying you're ok. If you're still concerned at your 2 year appointment ask your doctor.

don't worry she will talk when she is ready, my grandson peditrician told my daughter to get him a speech therapist and he was two at the time and I told her he will talk when he gets ready. He didn't really start talking until he was three and half now she can't shutt him up. Now she has a two year old who will be three in june she doesn't talk either she points to everything that she wants if you give her the wrong thing she pushes your hand away and starts crying.

My son did not utter more than a few words until he was 2 years old. Don't worry, she will talk when she is ready.

Ummm.... I'm not so sure if that is normal. Maybe ask your pediatrician.
