I find that when a child shows interest in the toilet it's best to go with it even if he does seem young because if you discourage it when the time comes when you want him to do it he will probably be stubborn and not want to. I work in childcare with toddlers. At every nappy change I ask them whether they want to sit on the toilet. If they do that's cool if they don't that's fine too, no pressure. Often they will sit there and won't do anything but it's the novelty they enjoy and especially when they get to flush!
Just take your time, don't hurry and it will happen eventually. Doing that, anytime from 18-24 months he will most likely be trained.

Honestly, one seems kind of young. Kids mature at different times, so who knows. For my son, I bought him some Elmo underwear, and Elmo potty doll and and Elmo goes potty book. I wouldn't let him wear the underwear or read the book until he was ready to try. I told him the book was for when he started wearing underwear. He tried wearing underwear once or twice and was upset when he wet himself. After a while, he told me that he wanted Elmo underwear. At this point, he was already going throught the night without wetting his diaper. He had never gone in the potty. I spent an enitre day with him (11 hours) in the bathroom. We read the Elmo book, blew bubbles and waited until he went on the toilet. He went once in his underwear and finally at the end of the day went in the toilet.
After he went in the toilet the first time, the rest was easy. He still had accidents over the next 2 days. I've read that's because they are going through the process of teaching their bodies to hold it until they reach the bathroom. After 2 days, there were hardly any accidents and after 2 weeks, there weren't anymore.
I think it helped that I waited until he was ready (he was almost 3) and that I helped give him the idea that he wanted to try (with the cool Elmo stuff).
Of course if daddy is more helpful, he can play the shoot the cheerio game. If he's not ready, he might not take to that either though.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Why are you pushing him? You may be setting him up for some anxiety attacks or stuttering later. Potty training shouldn't begin any sooner than 2 1/2 or 3.

I think one is too young for potty training. It sounds like he's just curious about it and is doing stuff you guys are doing, which is great! Most kids start potty training between two and four years old. If you start them too early they will get frustrated because their bodies just aren't developed enough to control it (to "hold" it). Also, he has to be able to remove and put on his own pants. We've had a potty chair for our almost-3-year old for a year now. She puts her dollies on it and she sits on it from time to time. They'll do it in their own time. My advice, get him a potty chair, but don't push it.

K here's what you do:
Head to the desert, and find yourself a magic lamp buried in the dunes. Give it a rub, and tell the genie your wish...
Seriously, you cannot potty train a one year old. He's just playing when he imitates you. It's the best way for him to learn, but if you pressure him to actually use the potty, you may end up putting him off the whole business (after all, it's much easier to go in his pants and have you change the diaper).
Give him a couple years, and allow him to keep imitating you. Have patience with him...Good Luck!

here is a link to an organization that helps w/ potty training. and it does work. sometimes there are chapters in your state that have support people that can answer your questions, and help you. my boys were out of diapers by age 18 months. (still had some accidents, but we had little need for diapers after that age.) good luck!
