Not sure why, but I was thinking about the different types of combat boots used by the US military.

Then I wondered, what types of boots / flippers do the US marines wear when they have to swim to a beach for an amphibious assault like in the commercial? It sure seems like combat boots would be heavy full of water, and flippers wouldn't be very practical for running over sand.

Links to pictures, if possible, would be nice. Thanks!!

A guy friend of mine is in the marines, and starts boot camp this coming December 17th. He is not in infantry- in fact, he will be building and driving humvees, and will most likely not be stationed in Iraq. I am well aware that anybody, no matter what position they're in, can be deployed to Iraq for infantry. My friend will be serving a four year term in the military, what are the chances that over that time he will be deployed? Will this upcoming election lower the chances of him being sent to Iraq?

I know the war is getting worse, but i'm not blaming anyone, because war is a part of America. It has been since the Pilgrims came here, and even before. We did not get this country by backing down. But, myquestion is ...do you think that WW3 is around the corner?

Because today Osama's Message, and something about the Middle east's gulf guards are taking over..idk...but anyways what are your opinions?

Please no ignorance!

If someone you know is claiming to be a retired military officer are they committing an offence?

Is it only impersonating an officer if they dress up in a uniform and go to events etc??

What about if they just tell simple stories (not claiming to be this great hero or whatever, but just that they were there with a certain unit etc. and they were the officer in charge etc..)

If they just claim they have been an officer in the British armed forces and tell a few close friends who believe them but never use the deception to gain anything or to better their position etc. Are they still committing an offence? If so, how serious and how do you (or should you) report them? Would a quiet word telling them I know the truth be better seeing as they haven't done anything more than claimed to have served and been to certain places etc.?? But are not wearing the uniform or pretending to be a specfic person? If the deed is purely for an ego trip and not with any malicious intent?

FACT:

Open air hydrocarbon fuel fires, whose only source of oxygen is still air, cannot supply enough oxygen to a combustion reaction to drive temperatures above 250 C. In very strong winds, and with very well mixed fuels (atomized fuel droplets), you might get up to 600 C, but no open air fires have been recorded at temperatures above 650 C.

If you don't believe me, then you can try it for yourself. Measure the flame temperature of an open air fire with a pyrometer or a thermal imaging camera. Try to get liquid aluminium dripping off some solid aluminium or aluminium foil, using an open air fire. (Melting point of aluminium is 550 C). Try this yourself.

Ok, now explain where all the molten steel came from!

FROM THE MOUTH OF BUSH HIMSELF: September 15, 2006

Press Conference of the President, The Rose Garden, 11:15 A.M. EDT

"For example, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed described the design of planned attacks
of buildings inside the U.S. and how operatives were directed to carry them
out. That is valuable information for those of us who have the responsibility
to protect the American people. He told us the operatives had been instructed
to ensure that the explosives went off at a high -- a point that was high
enough to prevent people trapped above from escaping."

Well, I'm pretty strong, my upper body strength is very good, so is my lower body strength, and my dedication. It also helps to mention that my mind can bench press 100 lbs.

But, and it's a big but. I have a huge problem with running and anything that involves cardiovascular effort. I'm about 15 pounds overweight, but it doesn't hinder my athletic ability. I've asked my track coach what's wrong with me, and Sports induced asthma is a good possibility. (It got ugly. I started wheezing, and passing out, 10-15 minutes into a slow-paced jog)

I'm willing to kick my own as-s into shape, and work around this hurdle, WITHOUT it showing up on my medical record and I REFUSE to take medication. If worst comes to worst, I will get myself diagnosed, but I don't have much time left (only 2 years) before I apply to the Naval Academy.

What do you guys suggest? And if you're gonna be an asshole, don't answer!! =)

My younger sister was in the Air Force for six years. She was at the end of her term when she was put on the weight program. She has lost the weight and now wants to return as an officer. Our dad thinks that it is too late for her (she is 34 and has been out for 10 years) and he really doesn't want her to go back. Does she have any chance of getting back in?

I'm just wondering what makes a war end up being World war?

Why is the "war on terror". or the conflict in Iraq not called "World war 3"???
Why was WW1 and 2 called that?

I'm strongly considering joining the Navy after 3 years of working towards a Biology degree that I don't really want. I am horrified by the prospect of having to be somebody's lab jockey and having little job advancement with only a B.S.

I want to do something that will be worthwhile and pay decently. My recruiting officer tells me that I can pick pretty much any job I want with my scores, but I'm a little overwhelmed by all the choices. I'm leaning towards CTI, depending on how I fare on the DLAB that I will be taking next week.

Also, I don't plan to make a career out of the Navy, so preferably a rating that I'll learn skills that I can transfer to the civillian world.

My ASVAB score was 99; the subscores all range from 64 (AO) to 76 (GS).

for many years since the end of the cold war less and less people joined the armed forces and the goverment didnt encourage people that much to join after all after around it didnt look like a major war owuld happen with all the worlds major powers being allies and at least civil to each other so it didnt look like a major war could happpen, but now that we have so many troops in the middle east we have completly run out of troops not a very nice thought if someone came invading so should the uk aim on creating a larger armed forces.
