I am a 13 year Special Forces vet. It really depends on the group actually. There is allot of recruiting in SF that is not open to just anyone. I was HALO qualified, jump master, and unlike the answer above, also attended Marine Recon Sniper school.
If I were you I would go infantry and hit Ranger school, with a tab for Special Forces. If you test really well, you could be in a clandestine operations group, or you could be like the 7th group that functions as a political arm at times. As now they are training the Iraqi police.
SEALS and Green Berets both get respect. You also have Delta Force which some consider a step above all of them.
Truth is they typically attend schools of each service depending on specialty.

I've done a lot of research regarding the SEALs as well as a bit of research on Special Forces in the other branches. Contrary to what others have said Marines do have special forces (Marine Force Recon). While the SEALs are most widely known due to media publicity, all are highly trained and specified. The Army special forces range from Rangers, Green Berets, to DELTA. In comparison, every branch's special forces are very similar in there capabilities, although the SEALs are set apart by their concentration in marine combat. Sorry that I cannot be of much help with concern to the HALO jumps, but your best bet would be to research and talk to a recruiter.

Special forces is a distinctive SOF within the military. Everyone else is specified operations. No contributors of alternative branches' specified operations Cabot become a member of CAG (delta) until they switch to the military first sure you CAN volunteer for CAGs decision approach assuming you meet the bodily and historical past standards. You do not must be SF or ranger to volunteer to wait the briefing.

There are only two branches of the military that has what you are asking: Army Special Forces and Navy Seals. After completing Basic Training, you can apply for these units. The "recommendations" are: Be physically fit, high score on weapons qualifications, able to accept orders without any hesitation, willingness to be a "team" member instead of an individual member, and always remember who you are.

The US Army Special Forces are THE ONLY Special Forces there is. Thier nickname is The Green Berets. You cant be a SF Sniper, but you can be a Ranger Sniper. There are general jobs like WEAPONS Sergeant, Medical Sergeant, Comm Sergeantm, etc. No snipers. Although they might have them if needed(the Weap. Sergeant that is)
Advice? Go Enlist with 18X Program. You have to be atleast 18. Recommendations? Run alot, and study up on every subject there is to know, especially cultures of other regions(Asia, Africa, The Middle East)

Don't join. The military uses and abuses people and could not care less about soldiers. Think. Don't just be a tool of the government.
