Kellogg is kind of right. It is thought that SEALS mostly conduct their operations on the water or under it. I went thru dive school with the SEALS and most of their operations are on land actually.
British SAS are more akin to the Green Berets, 5th groups, 10th etc. But depending on the group, relates over to the job. My groups was in the clandestine arena so we where in and out. But like Kellogg said, training the Iraqi police right now you have the 7th group if I am not mistaken. There is alot of overlap.
All cool dudes and are giving it all they can. They truly do more before 9 am than most do all day.

I would take the British "Special Boat Squadron" over the US Navy SEALS as these are comparable.
I would also take the SAS over the SEALS although they have slightly different orientation.
I certainly would prefer the SAS ( both British and Australian) compared with the US Army Special Forces.
One person mentioned US Marine Recon. They would not even match an ordinary Australian infantry soldier.

you really cant compare them...SEALs specialize in water-bourne operations, SAS are the British version of Delta(or should i say Delta is the American version of SAS, lol), and then army special forces have a completely different job...they train the indigenous ppl to fight and are often deployed to the field for prolonged periods...I.E. months, whereas SEALs and SAS are more rapid deployment oriented(of course Special Forces do conduct direct action missions and are superbly trained in the art of killing), but in all honesty you just can not compare them as units. Maybe you could compare how each unit does something individually, like individual marksmanship or CQB proficency...but you just cant compare the 3...they are too different.
