If you mean WW1 and WW2 it was because at the time the nation's people were isolationist in nature. They didn't want to become involved in other nations and becoming entangled in other nations affairs.

In World War 1, The U.S.A. has no wish to get involved in what was seen as a European Conflict. Being as they were poorly equipped to fight a war, the regular military small in size and troops being located in posts from in and around the USA to the Philippines.

In World War 2, the politicians hoped the war would be over before they would get dragged into it, they agreed to send supplies, but German U boats started sinking US ships inside US waters as well as out in the Atlantic, then Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Japan was allied with Nazi Germany and the rest is history.

ww1 or ww2? either one was beucase of the fact that we didnt want to get involved in ANOTHER european conflict. we had left there and wanted to start over. plus, we werent realy, imediatly effected or harmed by this war. we werent attaked untill lithuania and pearl harbor. stupid becuase we ended up making the war drag on more than it should have. thats why we had to attack hard durring oif.

a rather prudent way to be, why go to war unless you really have to?

As it is the US in the end had to join in you can not remain neutral when your ships are being sunk.
