So last week (17-21JAN) was the commissioning board for the AMEDD HPSP. The board keeps sending requests or "call outs" to my recruiter asking for more documents, which I keep dutifully providing. The recruiter tells me the 18 slots for which I am applying have not been filled and the good news is I have "already been boarded." However, she walks right up to the edge of saying that the document requests are just a formality. In other words, "you are commissioned, as long as you can provide these documents." So what the HECK is going on with my commission?

Me and my wife want children, but I'm worried that the planet might not be worth living on when they grow up. The doomsday clock is the closest it has ever been too midnight. Tell me it will happen or tell me something to relax my nerves.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona commanded attention in that hearing room, too. The 2008 GOP presidential prospect, a supporter of Bush's troop increase in Iraq, explored the consequences of pulling out of Iraq.

"It took us a long time to recover from losing a war in Vietnam ," he said in a reference to Vietnam, where he spent five years as a prisoner. Of course the way we are going we will lose Iraq too. We will see shame soon. No way can this country win in Iraq due to it being like Vietnam.

Does anyone have any info on this Air Force career? Would that be a good way to become a fire fighter after being in the service? How likely would it be for a fire protection apprentice to be deployed? Any info on this career would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

He is 36, a firefighter and a medic. He is frustrated with his job / life and now thinks he should enlist. First, it was reserves, now he is being pushed for active duty by the recruiter. I do not trust the recruiter, it sounds like a load of BS to me.
They claim that wages earned in the Army are tax free, moving costs are paid for, medical insurance is free for the family and he would make ~$1050/ month housing allowance to pay our mortgage and ~$1450 a month pay. He thinks this is a good deal. They have told him he could be in Phyc. Ops, then something called 61Whiskey (some sort of medevac) and the latest is that he could get a Phy. Asst. degree in two yrs, with a 4 yr. commitment tto active duty! (Masters in civilian world.)
They want him to be driven to MEPS by a recruiter Friday night, test all day Sat. and sign more papers. I think this stinks and I resent not being given a say in this. I think he is being lied to and will be trapped into something he hates. Insight please???

Pertaining to the Iraq War, of course.

We've been at it for 4 years. We must know what we need to know by now. How long before we win or how long before we quit.

Five American soldiers were killed when a group of Iraqis dressed in American army uniforms penetrated a secure government compound in the Baghdad suburb of Karbala. The insurgents drove an armored GMC SUV - standard US government issue - through multiple checkpoints to enter the compound, one of the most protected areas in Iraq.

Once inside, they drove directly to a building housing security officials planning counter-insurgency activity. They opened fire on a meeting in progress, targeting only Americans. After 20 minutes of exchanged gunfire, the attackers got back in their SUV and drove away. Iraqi officials noted that the attack was striking for the sophistication of its planning and execution.

My fiance just got discharged from the national guard. And he can't find a job around where we live and he's talking about going to Florida for a job. Are there any type of jobs that you think that wouldn't turn you down for a discharge around where we live in Texas- so he wouldn't have to go out of state?
