Delayed entry program's main purpose was to sign up high school kids while they were in the middle of their senior year so that they can ship off when school ends or sometime around that time frame. I am currently in my 6 year of service to the Marines. With the Corps you sign an 8 year contract.4 active duty and 4 inactive reservist. Now during those 4 years of inactive reserve time there needs to be an act of the president for you to be called back. However the time that you spent in DEP takes off of the IRR time. I spent 9 months in the DEP program.
As far as money goes. Wait until the president starts the incentives to make the military larger you will be sure to get paid well. And ask your recruiter about possible scholarships. For instance I have Marine Corps College Fund Scholarship and that coupled with MGI Bill pays me roughly $1,833 per monthfor the next 36 months, not to shabby ah?
And a final piece of advice, most recruiters lie so do your own information search, and dont be afraid to ask people in that service if what your recruiter is telling u is true because those SOB's will promise u the world.

The Navy has a very good delayed entry program. I used it. Signed up while I was in senior year and turned 18. Finished school , went active duty in July. Got out after 8 yrs ( 2 enlistments ) and used GI Bill to go to university, then went back into service ( you can use a commissioning program to enter as an officer this time around if you chose ) and retied after 24 + years. You can use these programs to get a degree that might have been out of your reach (financially ) or education you might not have been available to you previously . Maybe you just are not ready to go into a university / college program right now ( I wasn't..... wanted to see some of the world out there ) . Either way , FINISH SCHOOL . The services wont touch you if you don't but should you some how slip in without a high school diploma your choices of schools and training in the service will be nill. Beleave it or not , since the late 60's / early 70's all the service's have held very high standards and requirements just to get in and they ARE NOT LESS once you are in. You run into scum and *** holes no mater where you go in this world but across the board all the services are for better trained and educated than the general civilian public at large . So don't look for it as an easy way out , it is NOT for every one ( many can't handle the stress or disciplin required ) . Use it right , you can see some of the world , get a degree , do something for your country , and come back and tell those who dont have a clue just how lucky we are here and why it's important to vote , get involved etc in what we see going on around us.

Enlisting is a commitment you make for YEARS. Please do some checking in to which branch of the military is the best fit for your skills and abilities before you make a decision about which branch to join. Don't make the decision based on the amount of the signing bonus or the length/quality of the DEP. A few thousand dollars isn't going to mean much to you if you spend the next 5 years wishing you'd enlisted in a different career path.

As for "paying for college, gaining leadership skills, and seeing the world" You sound like a recruiter... I recommend you do a bit more research... doesn' t sound to me like you know what being in the military is really all about.

Good luck to you!

For God's sake, believe me, forget about the enlistment bonus. Find out what you are qualified to do and then pick something that interests you. We had a saying, "Pick your rate, chose your fate." Think about it.
