Law & Ethics - March 2007

As I look around at the freedoms Americans have given up without much thought in the last few years, I have to wonder: are we poised, willing and ready to become a police state?

If arbitrary decisions by individuals in the law enforcement community can lead to your being spied upon, denied the right to travel, perhaps even being black-listed from gainful employment, and we are left with no meaningful appeal in the process... doesn't this strike you as an odd response to 9/11, which was conducted, it has been said by those very agencies who are eroding our rights, because 'they hate our freedom'...

This is a serious question, and I would ask you not to dismiss it, or respond with rancor.

My neighbor threw this great party over the weekend, most of the neighborhood got smashed at his place. Anyways, while completely plastered, I pulled down my pants and started lighting my own flatulence, pulling off a fairly impressive light show. Unfortunately, I caught the curtains on fire, and while the fire was quickly put out with beer, there is some damage. Mainly burnt curtains and beer soaked carpet.

Any suggestions?

If the Sentate subpeonas a White House official who refuses to testify, is there an instrument similar to the bench warrant? That is, can they be held in contempt and if so, what penalties or means of enforcement does the congress have? Who are the agents of enforcement?

Ok, ok, leave out your own personal emotional gunk. Try to be objective. Sure, kids can be cute, etc. But given that the average American's ecological footprint is almost 10 times that of the average African's. isn't having kids here really, really bad for the planet and thus all the other living people currently in it?

I'm writing a human interest / position paper for my univeristy & I am looking for oppinions of other people that are not on campus & are random selection from the general population. This is not a homework assignment that I am looking for the easy way out! I am just looking for oppinions: "Should we ban cell phone use while driving...along with other multitasking?" This is a dangerous act & the fatalities can be reduced by enforcing the law. But cell phone use while driving is also good for emergencies. For facts & stats I am contacting the A.P.A, local police stations, accident reports from missouri, & a few other sources...but if you have any ideas please please let me know. Also, if u have an amazing answer i will contact you about possibly using u (correctly!) as a source in my paper! SO any real ideas & oppinions about the subject & any other sources would be amazing! None of your ideas will be used unless i contact u for permission and correct info!
Thanks-a-million guys!

This infuriates me, but to be honest its getting so ridiculous that this kind of thing is getting pretty normal.

It seems that it is the main source of income for so many.

Also, if you legalise it these people would no longer have to fear the law and the crime rate would drop because it would no longer be seen as a crime. Muggers would no longer feel ashamed but would be proud of their profession just like doctors, engineers etc...? That would bring communities together.

Muggers would mug other muggers as they are running away with their victims purse; it would be fun !

Does that make sense ? Would I make a good politician ?

From the Age of 8 to 11 yrs my Son was put in a situation where if I knew about it He would have been protected, My son was told never to tell his Mom or you will never see me again, (Marijuana grow op in his Home)..this effected my son for years, in school, with his friends and between us, I never knew why He was so angry, kept so much inside of him, until one day He spilt the beens and I had him taken away, He still has night mares, he still seeks councelling...now He is 18 and wants to sue His father for introducing Marijuana to him at the age of 8, the loss of his school years and the anger that came between him and I, He is a smart Kid and knows that any Father with any morals would not have put him through Hell, could this Law Suit take place in Canada?(His father and I are devorced and He had his Son on weakends at his House).

What do you think about the new law allowing schools to ban muslim veils. Do you think this is a sensible law or will it only make things more difficult and encourage some girls not to attend school?

We live in TX, my husband has a daughter from a previous relationship that we pay child support for & she lives in Ohio. Admittedly, communication is few & far between (both parties guilty). Now we're trying to get into contact with her, but so far have had no luck. We're using mutual friends, but it seems the Ex isn't willing to give us contact info.
I know there are Father's Rights, but am not sure how it works when you live in a different state than the child. Can someone enlighten us, please?
Thanks! :)

I got hit by a pickup about 14 years ago (I was about 7 y/o then) and took the guy who hit me to court to sue him over it. And now I found out that I really got more money (about 9-10 times as much) then I orginally thought I had. And I'd like to find the paper to find out exactly how much money I really got out of the settlement, and who paid what bills and stuff like that. My question is, could I go to my local courthouse to find that stuff or would I have to go to the county courthouse to find it and get copies? I don't wanna do anything online. Rather do it in person so I know what papers I need and what I don't need, and to see if theres any papers I didn't think of that I might need. Any help would be great.

It appears that about 16.5% of my weekly earnings go into taxes. Now that I've looked into it, that seems like a lot over the course of a year. Why do we have to get taxed so much?
