The best answer is: It Depends. If you deserted for a good reason, then no. Infact, often desertion isn't enough these days, at least not alone. Now, if there's desertion and adultery....oh yeah, you'll have to pay.

Alimony and child support are different.

Child support payments are based on the needs of the child, and are independent of the grounds for the divorce.

Alimony payments are based on the situation, the lifestyle of the spouses before divorce, the funds each has available, and how much of any of that came about during (as opposed to before) the marriage.

But at-fault divorce (grounds such as abuse or desertion) do have an effect on how much alimony either spouse will pay.

It seems like you mean your spouse deserted you.

You have to pay to get a divorce no matter what. There are court costs and fees that must be paid in order to file and complete the process.

You may be eligible to apply for fee waivers depending on your income. Check with your local legal aid office.
