I don't know where in the world you are, but a friend has recently divorced in UK. She had legal aid which helped with her divorce, but the fees had to be paid back when the matrimonial home was sold.

Pay what? You have to pay the filing fee for the divorce. In my are $150.00, but you can go Pro-Se which is, you do it without a lawyer.

Depends on the state, and local laws. Also on the finances of both parties involved. It's possible.
