Fish - December 2007

I bought the 2 small fishes a month ago and I was cleaning the tank, had to change water every week and have done it for 3 times already without any problem. Anyway, I had to catch them with small fishnet so I could transfer them to a bowl. The male one was easy to catch but the female took 2 minutes and when I finally caught it and transferred it to the bowl, its not longer moving and it died with eyes open! Did I kill it accidentally? It was no longer swimming and it looks dead and I was sad, it was the very first time I ever had an aquarium and fishes. I wonder how it died?

I have one guppy in my one gallon tank here at college with me. I will be going home for the holidays, and I need to bring her home with me. It's a 5 hour drive. Should I leave her in the tank and bring the whole thing home, or should I put her in a bag and transport the empty tank separately? Which would be easiest for me and the least traumatic for my fish?

My daughter absolutely loves to put her hands in the fish tank and touch the fish and try and "tickle" them. I am worried that it will stress the fish out. Is this ok, or should I try and discourage her from doing it?

My dad bought a pair of tropical fish some time ago for our tank, and since then one of them ( the female i think ) died. The other fish has been on its own since then and seems quite happy. Thing is, my dad can't remember what fish he bought, the sales person didn't give much information, local stores aren't sure what it is and it'd help to know what species it is to make sure it suits a new habitat. I've found similar varities before, but none close enough, and I'm sure it's a cichlid. Please help asap, and thanks in advance.

I managed to snap a shot of it too..

Picture doesn't quite do it justice. It really is quite a beautiful fish, 3" long and it changes colours. Fins can go pale green or deep blood red, and the spots can fade and you see large, thick vertical stripes down its sides instead, either red or brown.

Thanks for any help again.

I want one snail in my tank, I heard there's a kind that aren't hermaphrodites and can only breed with two?

Was it mystery snails? I just want to double check before I buy one and find my tank overrun!

I want some ideas for some fish that would get along good in a 50 gal tall tank. I would like some medium sized fish as the smaller fish, like guppies and mollies, just seem too small.

I know crushed coral is a good substrate to use for increasing the PH, but I'm not sure what rocks to use to build some caves and hiding spots.

Also, what rocks would be good for a South American Cichlid tank? Since they like softer water than the Africans they would require different rocks, right?

I was about to get a 20 liter tank today but when i mentioned that i was going to use it for saltwater fish, the guy told me to get one of those huge filters that was basically larger than the tank. Do i really have to get those large ones, or will a regular over the back filter do? I'm not really going to get saltwater fish but brackish green spotted puffers...

I've been reading and I am confused on the names of cichlids.

Rams cichlid, german ram, butterfly cichlid, bolivian cichlid, gold ram?

Same or different? I'm thinking of keeping the bolivian cichlid because i heard that they are the easiest to keep in a planted tank compared to other cichlids. Does the bolivian ram dig up the substrate, because that would be bad. =(

Thanks!

I have had my fish for about 2 months now, and while he is usually a pretty active pet, he has mysteriously started to hang out at the bottom, or vertically at the top.

I've been reading on his symptoms, and I think he either has swim bladder disorder, or he's dying. I recently changed his water, and I changed 100% of it, so maybe that's the cause of it.

The water temp is almost always around 78 degrees, and he has plenty of space to move around.

Does anybody know what's wrong?

the vase holds about 1 gallon of water..
i'm thinking water changes would be stressful on the betta because since it's such a small amount of water, concentrations of anything (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, etc) would change significantly at the slightest change of water. so how should i cycle the vase? do i make any adjustments to the norm of cycling a tank? like should i increase/decrease the %age of weekly water changes or increase how often i do water changes or both??

my friends got me a betta in a vase for my birthday and i'm away at college, but i have a fish tank at home. i've had some fish care experience and i'm worried about the whole fish in vase/bowl controversy. but what if you place gravel in the vase from an already established fish tank???

please state the reliability of your answer ie. you're a veterinarian, you study fish, you've cared for whatever fish for however many years, etc.

my friend got me a betta fish in vase that holds..i wanna say approx. 1 gallon of water. but i'm worried about it because there's all this controversy about betta fish in vases. does anyone know the main points for the objections?

is it just because it's much too small than their natural habitat so it's considered inhumane?
-we're never going to be able to create a home anywhere near the size of his natural habitat, so of course bigger will always be better so i'm thinking the size should be okay for now because he's got quite a bit of swimming space..

or does it have something to do with the ability of keeping the water in good conditions for the fish?
-because i'm thinking cycling would be stressful on the betta because water changes in such a small amount of water would drastically change concentrations of anything (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, etc) but what if you placed gravel into the vase from an already established tank and you go ahead and do regular weekly water chang

We have several cichlids in our tank and one female in particular has been a very successful breeder! Too successful in fact, as we can't keep as many as she's producing. Her babies all come out either yellow like her (she's a yellow lab) or grey with vertical stripes (as is one of the males). Is there any way to tell which of these babies is female or male just by color? Would the yellows be only female? We have another tank and seeing as we can't find a pet store that will take them we want to try and make a "female tank" to prevent over breeding.
