The beneficial bacteria will grow on any surface of anything you have in the tank. So they will grow on the marbles as well as on the gravel, even though you may have more surface area for them on the irregular shaped gravel than smooth marbels. But as stated in another answer, most of the beneficial bacteria will be found in the filter media.

The main bacteria grows in your filter media, there is partial bacteria which grows on gravel and other stuff
but 90% of the bacteria is in your filter

I would think that it may grow better since you usually see algae on the glass of your aquarium and not your gravel, unless I never paid enough attention to it. Marbles may not be the best choice for gravel depending on you fish.

It should be fine. The bacteria will grow on the substrate, decorations, side of the glass, filter pad, other filter media.
