Also, don't discount the availibility of web resources. There are a lot of websites with "MIS"information, but a lot of good ones as well. Almost every fish group has a National or International Organization promoting it's keeping and breeding, and these websites can contain more up-to-date info.

Some examples:
http://www.ibcbettas.org/
http://www.ifga.org/
http://www.cichlid.org/
http://www.internat-anabanassoc.org/
http://www.nanfa.org/
http://www.aka.org/aka/modules/content/index.php?id=2

Not only can you find info/articles, many have a forum where you can get "instant" answers to questions and talk with others keeping the species. May also have store/trading areas where you can get fish directly from breeders (which may be of far better quality than you see in stores, plus some of the more unusual species/varieties).

Dr. Axelrod's - Encyclopedia of tropical fish. It is expensive but has good colour photographs and covers the vast majority of fish available.

As someone else said, Dr. Axelrod's book is very good. Pay attention when you get it though. There is a smaller version and a full version. The small version has all the pictures of the full one but the full one has more information.
