The wildest thing I have seen done with an aquarium was to put a piece of plexiglass in the middle separating into 2 tanks ( the seam was not visible ). They had drilled small holes in the middle to allow circulation. On one side were predatory fish such as Jack Dempsey/Oscars and on the other side small community fish that are slow moving peaceful. It took a long time of staring at the tank to figure out how these fish were living together?

I have also seen wonderful terrariums with almost a jungle like apperance of plantings and a waterfall in the corner.

What would be considered "cool" by some may very well be considered boring by another. It's really up to you. What type of pet would you prefer? A 55 gallon tank is not large enough for many aggressive predator fish. The length of the tank will dictate what type of reptile you could keep in it (fish, too). If keeping fish, you'd need to research the type of fish you like. Tropicals will need heaters and quite possibly lots of plants, driftwood and/or rubble rock. Saltwater tanks will require live sand, rocks, and highly specialized additives and equipment. Reptiles will require a different type of cover than appropriate for fish. Also, depending upon the reptile/amphibian, you'll need to consider UVB/UVA lighting, heating, humidity, plants and other species specific requirements.

Bottom line is you need to decide what you want to keep and determine if you are willing and able to spend the time and money required to keep the pet(s).

Hope this helps.

Try half shore and half shallow water(brackish) Grow mangrove seeds(pretty interesting in itself),and keep Mud Skippers,(little fish that walk out onto the beach),Archerfish(fish that knock insects into the water by spitting),maybe some Crabs,or Scats,or Mollies. Do a little research on brackish water fish, there are lots more.

The second answer about the plexiglass in the middle is a great idea, I have one like that and it is really cool it also helps get fish used to each other so that one day they might be able to live together(depending on what they are of course). It is also funny watching them run into each other for a while until they realize that they can not get to the other side. And it just looks cool.
