1. Using an airpump would be a lovely idea, but it simply doesn't work. Diffusion causes CO2 (which is higher in the water than outside) to be released into the atmosphere when using an air pump to break the surface, which is why it is an OXYGENATING tool that will actually prevent enough CO2 from reaching your plants. If you can find a valve that will safely control the dispersal of CO2 and some means of diffusing it (either sticking it into the intake of a closed filter like a canister filter or a powerhead that doesn't create much surface agitation OR using a simple, glass diffuser), it would be absolutely fine. Just make sure they are filling it with as much CO2 as possible (instead of half CO2 with the rest being other gasses). Contact me if you have any questions.

EDIT: Adding CO2 is not removing oxygen if you do it properly. All you are doing is increasing CO2 (pretty simple) and allowing the oxygen to remain where it is. Of course, if you pump the tank full of CO2, you will kill your fish with CO2 poisoning, but that is why you need the valve. These people that are saying not to add CO2 to your planted tank simply don't know what they are talking about, nor have they kept CO2 injected tanks. Any surface agitation from airstones and HOB filter spillways releases much of the CO2 the Discus would produce, leaving your tank pretty bare. Take a non-CO2 injected tank and compare it to a CO2 injected tank with the exact same specifications and you will ALWAYS see that the CO2 injected tank has MUCH better plant growth.

As I said, you need pure CO2, which you should be able to get at a welding shop they will fill your canister for you).

Paintball Co2 Aquarium

Yes, in fact that's evidently a very standard way of doing automatic or semi-automatic CO2 injection. I try not to plug products since I'm not paid lol, but Red Sea makes a CO2 system specifically for paintball tanks. That stuff gets pricy of course, but I'm assuming it'll include everything you need. Ot if you're into DIY and you're pretty handy - which I'm not lol - then I'm pretty sure you can buy the individual parts at a hardware store and/or a medical supply store that deals with oxygen tanks and make it yourself more cheaply.

No, your paintball CO2 isn't sourced pure CO2, so you could poison your fish and if your adding CO2 your removing oxygen so you are going to have your fish on the surface all the time.

Discus are a big fish and produce more than enough CO2 as waste. Don't add anymore!

marcus is right. make sure of the quality of co2 you are using. i went to school for welding. the stuff you get from the supply shops is 99.95% pure. this is the highest legally allowed.

ive read of figures from someone who costed out thier setup for a pressurized system to cost 3$ per tank per year.

It would be way to expensive for the mount of good it would do. Your talking only one to two percent of the Co2 accually staying in the water. The tank will take care of the Co2 all on its own. All you need is good lighting for the plants that you hope to keep.

You would be wasting your time... get a normal easy to set-up airpump... Theres more than enough Co2 in our atmosphere for plant respiration
