Fish - December 2007

I have just bought three Betta females for a ten gal and I've read that when the three meet for the first time they will establish a hierachy. Well, when I put them in the tank together, everyone swam in circles around one another puffing thier gills. I'd read about this behavior and so it seemed to be going fine. However, little harriet got freaked out and bit slyvie and it created this riot in the tank. The pet store said it was normal and to let them duke it out, so thats what I did. Eventually the fighting did stop, and everyone swam to different ends of the tank. Rita and Harriet would swim in opposite directions everytime they saw one another but Sylvie, however, keeps searching the tank, interested in finding Harriet. She doesnt even give Rita a second glance. Harriet hides in the bottom of the tank now and I was just wondering, if Harriet is doomed to a life of Harassment since she is lowest rank in the tank? How can she be happy if Sylvie wont let her alone? Will this pass?

Can I turn it off at night? It's annoyingly loud from vibration of the pump and water noise from the bubbles.

The tank is a 10g low-light planted.

Hard to sleep with.

I just filled my aquarium last week, but three days ago, the water became cloudy, today i bought some new fish and noticed that a gold fish that i bought las week has white dots on it's tail. I got a medicine. Do this has anything to do with the cloudy water? How do I get rid of it.
It is a 24 gal tank, and I have a big filter and nice temp.
Im getting desperate...

I have a healthy tank, and accidentally bought a upside down catfish that seems to have a little bit of tail rot but im not 100% sure. Maybe 80% sure... but anyway I treated the tank with Fungus Clear Tank Buddies and removed the carbon as directed. However it didn't say how long until I can put the carbon back in. It said to retreat after 4 days if necessary.

Does this mean that I should put the carbon back in 4 days if the tail rot is gone? Does it really only take 4 days to heal?

Got a 12 gallon tank (Eclipse 12) and we need advice. My son picked a long fin black skirted tetra & 2 gold skirt tetras to start. The gold skirts are picking on the long fin black skirt--it spends most of its time hiding. Will adding 1 or 2 long fin black skirts help, or should we pick different fish to complete the tank? Ideally my son wants to add 2 longfin black skirts, a platy, and a cory catfish-thoughts? We've read conflicting reports about whether or not platys and corys need to have more than one of their own kind.

Thanks for all suggestions!

I recently bought a piece of coral, and there are a few worm-like creatures. They protect their bodies with a shell of coral pebbles. From time to time, I would see their highly elastic arms extend out for every long distance and crawl along the live rocks. the arms look clear. I'm not sure what it is, or if it is harmful to corals or fish. If it is harmful, how do I get rid of it?

My sister just brought goldfish home from college and left them here. They are white with orange and black spots. I am actually not sure that they are goldfish, but I think they are. Anyway, we just changed the tank and put tap water in. There are 2 fish and snail. Do I need to put anything into the water, there is a bubble maker thing and little rocks, a castle, and fake plants. Do I need to put chemicals into the water? If I do, what kind? My sister says she usually doesn't put anything in the water. It is almost 9 and I don't think that a pet store is open, so if I need to put something into the water, it will have to wait. Will they live til then?

*P.S. I always do thumbs up or down and I ALWAYS pick a best answer.**********

I bought 2 leopard puffer fish and 1 figure 8 puffer and I have read all that I can find about them online. I was hoping that someone could give me more info(I like to know everything I can about my fish)A few things that I could not find were:
1. How to tell male from female?
2. How do they breed and when or what age?
3. Any other basic info that I might not have found online, things that are learned from personal experience?

I have recently bought a male betta. I am starting to feel awful because he is in a tank by himself and i only bought him a 1/2 gallon tank. is that way to small for him? and if its too small why would the company sell it. that would be just dumb since they are made especially for bettas.
