My brother is really into to fishing and all that. For Christmas he'd really like a fish tank with different kinds of trout. Where could I find trout to stock the fish tank?

Since trout are game fish, you may not find them for sale, depending on where you live. Many states have regulations prohibiting the sale of native species. Also, most states have regulations regarding the "keeping" of game fish, and depending on the state, you may need a special permit (some only require a fishing license).

Trout also need a cold-water environment, and the tank would need to have a chiller (and this would be a major expense, considering the size of tank adult trout would need. The chiller alone would probably cost $500-$600 or more for the size that would be needed: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/cat/info/23005/category.web

Not that I'm trying to discourage you, but these are things you'll need to consider. You can contact your local fish/game department and see what the regulations are - they may also be able to point you to a local hatchery where you can get fingerlings.

Another possible source of info for you is the North American Native Fish Association (NANFA): http://www.nanfa.org/

Far easier than trout, you might see if your brother would be interested in warmwater fish such as panfish, bass, or native catfish which don't need cold water and can live at normal room temperatures. These would still fall under state regulations, but I've kept these, as well as darter, minnows, suckers, a small carp, banded killifish, and others (with a state permit) as part of a native fish display and they can live at room temperature.

Rainbow Trout For Sale

If your brother really loves trout, he would never torture such a beautiful native fish in a tank. It also requires very clean cold oxygenated moving water (55F or below optimal) as well as exotic food like mayflies, crayfish as they will not readily eat feedergoldfish. I made the mistake of raising a rainbow trout in a tank. He grew to about 18 inches and was well taken care of but one day I came to my senses and realized the horror I had put this wild fish through. I let him go in the gunnison river the next morning. Im still very sorry to that fish for my selfishness. Please dont do it. There is a reason why trout are not found in aquariums.

go fishing,
ages ago i caught a baby rainbow trout which was only like 2-3 inches (around 5 cm) and it lived in a tank indoors, it lived happily with my pump on 24\7. one day my mum turned off the pump for like 4 hours and it died, if u keep trout make sure their water is ALWAYSS moving.
another time i caught a trout about 20cm and it lived in my outdoor pond, until my couzin 'accidently' made it ram in to the wall.
anywayy just make sure the waters not always still.

Trout are farmed, they raise them from fry and keep them in ponds so they can eventually stock lakes etc.....
Call your local natural resources department, or Forestry department, they will give you a number to call, chances are the fish farmer will give you a few fry for your brother to give it a try growing them.
Just to note, they dont like warm or room temperature water so would do better in the garage or with a chiller on the tank.
