are the scales sticking out like a pine cone.

if so then it is dropsy, or kidney failure. due to poorwater quality.

if the scales arent sticking out then it is constipation, which indicates the wrong food items.

What do u feed your betta?

peas.... IMO the people who feed there bettas peas are just plain stupid and it shows. peas are not good for bettas and will cause consitpation.

Freezed dried bloodworms. they are recommended for bettas. but what they dont tell ya is not everyday. Freezed dried anything is not a everyday food. It swells the stomach and will cause a fat betta like that.

So if you have anymore questions feel free to contact me directly. or see my betta site for correct betta feeding tips. http://www.bcaquatics.com

Edit: to the first post....dropsy isnt transferred from fish to fish so there isnt a need to QT it. While your right that if it is dropsy it will mostly die, drospy isnt a dieases. it is a syndrome and really indicates that there is poor water present and has kinda been taken care of poorly.

Antiparacite medication wont help as it isnt a parasite that causes drospy.

Drospy is caused by poor water which basically shuts down the internal organs and fuilds begin to build up causing the scales to stick out.

Medications really are ineffective for drospy as you have to find a way to restart the organs in order to cure it which is almost impossible.

Well, it definately looks like you overfed him and he got dropsy

The only way i know on how to treat is, by doing a 50% waterchange and start a 10 day treatment with maracyn TC
your water will kinda get a red tint, and will also show foam on the watersurface
After that, do a 50% waterchange and another 25% 3 days later, after that keep up with weekly maintenance of 25% waterchanges with a gravel siphon
Also don't feed him for at least 4-6 days when starting treatment
I healed a balloon molly with dropsy with this treatment

hope that helps
Good luck

That's dropsy. I'm sorry but he probably won't make it. You can give him antibiotics but by the time their bodies swell up like that it's usually too late. Just keep feeding him like normal and try to keep him comfortable. If he's in a tank with other fish you should quarantine him.

EDIT - To clarify, no dropsy is not contagious. It a symptom, not a disease. However, the cause of the dropsy may be contagious. The main cause is bacterial infection but it could be any number of things. Even if your fish does not have a contagious disease - it is going to die. When it dies it will release toxins into the water that are harmful to other fish. To be safe you should quarantine the fish.

I am so sorry. There are several medications on the market that may help. As mention above, antibiotics can be given. When I medicate mine, i put them in a dark quiet room. It helps the stress. (not completely dark) I have found the best medication is Mela Fix. Also put in a small amount of aquarium salt in his tank. This also helps for stress.

Good luck with him.

It's Dropsy, it's always dropsy. Read other answers. When in doubt it's dropsy. In fact I'm from now on calling it THE dropsy
Like THE vapors, THE gout and THE diabetes. It gives it the stature that THE dropsy deserves.

Unless your feeding him corn he's got dropsy. Don't feed him anything for a while,it won't hurt him and it will eliminate the possibility that you are grossly overfeeding your fish.
