Can I turn it off at night? It's annoyingly loud from vibration of the pump and water noise from the bubbles.

The tank is a 10g low-light planted.

Hard to sleep with.

I have an HOB, but it's an Aquaclear and IMO they do not produce enough surface agitation, unless the water level is low.

As long as the HOB is on, you can turn off the air pump.

I've never experienced surface agitation problems with AquaClear filters. Many people make the mistake of equating aeration or oxygenation with the production of bubbles (waterfall effect out of the filter). The truth of the matter is that the bubbles rise to the surface and pop too quicky to do much good. Most of the absorption of oxygen (and release of CO2) comes right at the water's surface. You get better oxygentaion and circulation through the tank when you fill the tank to the plastic trim on the tank/return on the filter so that a "rippe" effect is produced across the surface. It also makes the filter quiter when it's running and splashes out less water.

You can buy a "gang valve" that has 2 or 3 nozzles for airlines on it. Hook up your air stone to one of them and open one or two of the others slightly so there is not so much air going through the air stone.

I place noisy air pumps on a folded up wash cloth. It dampens the vibration and noise to the point you don't hear it.

If you have a HOB filter, you really don't need the air stone at night.

Bottom line, you could do without the air stone altogether if you absolutely have to. Sometimes you will get a pump that is just a piece of %*#@ and it is going to make noise no matter what you do.

Try setting the pump on a sponge. If it's on a soft surface, there will be almost no noise from vibration. About the bubble noise - maybe the pump is a little too strong for a 10g tank?

Look for a quieter pump, and spend the money, A longer airstone will change the bubbling to a nice quiet sort of fizz.

Does your tank have another filter, or is it just the air stone? You should look into an above tank filter, they are very quiet and work quite well.
