Hi, I've just set up a new tank and added bactozym which claims to speed up new tank syndrome. I've just tested the water and the nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels are all 'ideal', but the pH is 9.0.

How do I lower the pH, how long will that method take, will it affect the other levels, and once it's right can I add a few fish?

I have 16 red wag platy babys at about 1.4cm long each, two Gold Lyretail Molly fry about 1.7cm long each, and 6 (remaining) blue paradise gourami babies about 0.8cm long each. The mollies and platys are all between 6-8 weeks old and the gouramis are about 8 weeks old.

1. How long does it usualy take for a molly fry to reach fully grown status?

2. For Platys?

3. And Gouramis?

4. If the fry grow large enough to be larger than the largest mouth of my fish (in the main tank) would it be safe to put them in with the other fish?

5. Would the gouramis have a greater survival rate and/or bettert health if they are born and remain in their own tank, or in a breeding net/box?

PLEASE ONLY ANSWER THE QUESTIONS I ASK, DONT GIVE RANDOM INFORMATION UNLESS IT PERTAINS TO THEM!

I have had the fresh water tank for approximately 1.5 years now. Just a few weeks ago I noticed a white/clear algae that began growing on the rocks and plants. I vacumed the tank and removed most of it. Now its back even worse. What is it? Can it kill my fish? Is there any treatment for it? Any help is apprishiated. Thanks!

I know that lethargy can be a sign of illness, but it appears to be the only symptom.

He has been lazy for a few months, preferring to stay stationary on the bottom rather than swimming around. In the past couple of weeks it has gotten worse. The other day i can home to find him on his side on the bottom. I QT'd him with a heavy dose of salt, which seemed to perk him up, so i put him back in the tank. He has been swimming upright, but always along the bottom and recently he hasn't even been coming up to eat. he is starting to get skinny. Other than this, he shows no physical signs of illness or infection.

I have test kits to check the water, so i know that ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are all fine, and i do frequent water changes. Plus, his tankmate is perfectly healthy, so it doesn't really seem like a water quality issue.

I am worried that he may die. I'm thinking about picking up some sinking pellets to see if he will eat on the bottom.

What else can I do?

I have got a major snail problem going on in my tank, they have taken a particular fancy to the bogwood and have laid slimey snail egg yuk all over it, I have removed it whilst doing a partial water change and I don't want to put it back in until I have annhilalated them and their icky gunk.
What's the best way to get 'em? I was thinking of scrubbing the wood with a new (unused) toothbrush and boiling water, but don't want to upset the bacteria thing.
Any tried and tested methods without a 30 mile round trip to the fishy shop? My catfish are seriously pissed off 'cos I've nicked their hidey holes...

I've just gotten back into the fish tank hobby and recently purchased one of those 5-gallon tanks from Kmart. Not a permanent tank, just a cheap starter tank so I can learn to do things right and move up.

I've had my tank set up for two days and the water has already started getting really cloudy. I've treated the water as suggested by my local pet store but am stumped as to why the water wont clear up.

The tank I purchased has one of those UG filter but I think I may have made a mistake by purchasing those blue rocks instead of gravel. I'm wondering if the rocks may be preventing all of the grime in the water from getting through. Do you think this is the case?

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

I have had 2 bala sharks for about two weeks now and they have seemed very happy. I just added 2 silver dollars this Sunday, and ever since then one of my balas have been acting weird. One of the bala sharks keeps putting his nose up against the glass and swimming up and down. (Like he is trying to escape) Is this happeneing because new fish are in his area? The weird thing is though, the two groups of fish barely even notice each other in the tank. I just do not know why one of the balas are freaking out and the other is not? And why is he doing that? Please help.

All of my goldfishes have black on their fins and tails and then one of them has it on its fore head and around it's mouth and the other 2 have it around their mouth. I was wondering what this is? And how to treat it?

Right now I have 3 gouramis and a pleco in my tank. My powder blue (George) and my silver one with spots (Jimmy) get along fine but Jimmy endlessly chases my sunset thicklip (Peaches). He lets her eat but after that, he chases her behind the filter and she doesn't come out until the next feeding. Obviously she's really stressed.

Peaches used to be bright yellow-orange but now her eyes are really dark and her head is too and her color is dark and around her tail fin is grey speckles. She's acting normal (until she gets chased) and everyone else is fine. She's been darker for a while now and I just noticed the grey stuff today. I read that she might have a bacterial thingy, but those are supposed to spread, right? Everybody else is fine, though.

my female has only dropped 2 of her fry since last night but I can still see them inside her gravid spot- I can still see their eyes. She is a yellow/orange guppy so her spot is dark orange and I can see the black dots of the babies eyes still in there. I believe she is going to reabsorb them due to stress from the water change and my moving her last night trying to give her a safe place to give birth. But is there any way I can get her to deliver more of the fry before they are reabsorbed?

I've been treating my betta for ich for about 2 days now when I saw some white colored build up near his fin. But he seems to be getting worse instead of better. I'm treating him with some RidIch+ and some antibiotics. But from where he was a bit listless and just out of it to he's now really out of it, just floating aimlessly, is almost on his side, only moves to breathe from the surface and ahs gone grey when he should be solid black.

Did I do something wrong? Am I just not being patient enough? Anything I con do to help him?

I have a 28 gallon tank with 2 goldfish in it. They will be just about 2 years old here soon.

Recently while cleaning the tank, one of my "carbon cartridges" that are part of my undergravel filter came apart spilling little pieces of charcoal or whatever is used in them into the gravel. I cleaned it all up very quickly, but in the last couple of weeks the fish are becomming covered in black. It looks almost like they are wearing war paint on their bodies/face.

Are my fish in danger? They won't let me touch them to try and clean it off. Has anyone heard/seen something like this before??

And just for the record, my tank doesn't rely soley on the ug filter. I have a regular filter with the tank as well.

Any suggestions??
