For any bowl under 2 gallons, clean it twice a week. If it is above 2 gallons, a weekly cleaning should be sufficient. Fish produce ammonia, and without an established filter to remove the ammonia, it will build up and eventually poison the fish.

Like a few others have stated it depends on how large the bowl is. I clean mine out every day. You should clean smaller bowls no less than 3 times a week.

how big is the bowl? i keep mine in 2 1/2 gallons and try to clean once a week. sometimes they have to go a little longer but they are usually forgiving.

I would change out at least half of it 2 times a week. If you don't use a siphon to do your water changes, buy a turkey baster so you can get poo and any leftover food out.
