how big is the bowl? i keep mine in 2 1/2 gallons and try to clean once a week. sometimes they have to go a little longer but they are usually forgiving.

I would change out at least half of it 2 times a week. If you don't use a siphon to do your water changes, buy a turkey baster so you can get poo and any leftover food out.
