Do I need a protein skimmer in my saltwater aquarium? I have a sump tank and live rocks, but everytime I blow off my rocks or stir up my crushed coral an opauqe cloudy dust gets stirred up and is not getting filtered probably because it's too small. Will a protein skimmer help, and if so what is the best type to get for a 35 gallon tank. Where is the best place to purchase one? Thanks.

I bought 4 fathead minnows today and I have them in a 20 gallon tank. I'm just wondering how big do they get to see if I need to buy a bigger tank.

I bought a turbo snail about a month ago, and it had all these little raised white swirls on its shell, about 2-3mm in length and now they are all over my tank on the glass. They look like they might have some little animal in them, but I haven't seen any. Does anybody know what they are?

I mean, I've been trying to breed them for a while now. I keep putting the boy in the girl's aquarium, and he starts to build a bubble nest, but he never finishes. I put the lights on bright because I heard sunshine makes them more fertile. I put them in a 2 1/2 liter tank. No gravel. I've had several different pairs. Are the betta fish at pet stores to old to breed? Or too sick?

Guys, I think something is really wrong... my clownfish seems to have popeye AND ick....
The tank water smells, its cloudy, my shrimp died and the ammonia spiked!
It was cloudy before I added more rock... the rock was precured, then I used the rock-prep from Kent...

Whats happening???? How do I fix this???

I have a adult Long-finned Black Skirt Tetra and within the last 3-4 days he started to swim on his left side and it's almost like he had a stroke because his right side doesn't really move and his fins aren't locked into his sides so that's not it. And along time ago i remember seeing something about popeye sydrome what is that. And his eyes seem like their try escpape from his little skull. But I don't know if their just doing that because he's swimming almost on his side all time the time and he's just trying to see or what. But for a few seconds he swims like a normal fish then suddenly he'll go completely horizontal. Please if you know what this is help me. P.s he has a completely healthy looking body, color fins all good. That's why this is so weird. Thank you

My puffer is just over an inch long. And all of a sudden he stopped eating his blood worms. He usually goes crazy. Now he will only eat one or two. I dont know if his teeth are bothering him? I have only had him for 2 weeks. And he seems quite small to already have overgrown teeth but then i dont know how fast they grow..

We have a koi pond with about 6 goldfish in it. This summer, it appears they had babies and the babies are black. I'm confused as to how gold-color fish could produce black-color babies?

i have 3 pearly white fishes, one is a baby right now about half the size of his parents. The fish are pearly white and one has bright(but lightcolored) blue eyes(the color of the sky) with a very shiny opaline head(so does the baby)the other one has very bright red eyes. They have long pale(almost clear) colored tails. what kind are they and how do i tell them male from female? if you think you know what kind of fish i am talking about please tell me. Also please provide a link with a picture of the kind of fish. Also they are freshwater fish(they live in a pond in the back)Thanks.

i've been trying to lower my phosohate levels for about 2 weeks now. my tap water has about 1 ppm and i tested some bottled water and some distilled water and they were 1.5ppm and 2.0 (or above)ppm respectively. phosphate sponges are a good temporary fix but i am looking for a permenant fix. reverse osmosis isnt really an option for me any suggestions?

I live in Gloucester and due to flooding of water treatment plant have had no water for over a week. Now back on but unsafe to use, even when boiled for washing dishes/drinking etc. Need to do a partial-water exchange and not sure if bottled water safe to use. In meantime used bactozym and easybalance but nitrite/nitrate levels higher than they should be. Don't know when tap water will be safe again.

i've had a double tail betta for 5 months now and since day 1 i've been struggling to get rid of what i think is a swim bladder disorder. his abdomen is swollen and has problems staying balanced. i've tried feeding him less, even used an antibiotic called kanaplex , i change his water weekly, and put acquarium salt in his tank. this has been going on for the 5 months i've had him. i suspected he might have had an internal parasite since he darts around a lot and tries to scratch his gills a lot, so i tried treating him for ick (i'm not sure since i don't see anything on him)
but he's has not gotten better and recently is getting much worse. just the other day i saw that his fins were extremely torn up and shredded half his lower tail is gone, there's nothing plastic or sharp in the tank that could've done this. his gills are even having a hard time closing and he's gotten much more lethargic, he hardly moves much anymore.
should i just give up and euthanize him?

I read that for the first few days the fry will eat their egg sack but the parents moved the fry from the cave they hatched in and buried them for a day, they have now moved them again into a flower pot.

will they be ok without food until they are free swimming. I was going to feed them on crushed flakes and liquid fry food

I don't know what the difference is between these 3 names, but I have one of them lol. Anyway, about 3, 4 days ago I noticed that all of my anarcharis plant started developing these strings (about 2 inches long) coming out of them. What is that? Either it's very good, or very bad. =(

I just got a ryukin goldfish from the petstore like five days ago and he is only about 1 1/2 inches in length. I have read that the fish you get at the store are babies, and since they grow so big i was just wondering if there is any way to tell how old he is...or has anyone out there kept goldfish and knows at what age they are usually that length? He is from walmart if that matters since they may purchase their goldfish at a universal age. And pls spare me the comments about how walmart is terrible and he will die...my last walmart fish lived 4 years in a bowl (before i knew any better) and in fact i have had better luck with walmart than petsmart:) Besides he is doing just wonderful and is happy and active, his name is cetus:P So please only serious answers from ppl who can help me with his age. Thank you :D

Okay so I am planning on upgrading my tanks in about a month and in two days I am going to get more fish so they can "ajust" to eachother while they are young.I want opinions about the fish in my tanks such as if you think they will get along,am I overcrowding, and if you think I have a cool combo of fish!)
First tank is a 2.5g with 2 ghost shrimps,1 sunset platy,1 orange fancy guppy,1 lyre tail guppy, and 1 zebra danios(all male).I am going to add 1 sunset platy,1 fancy guppy, and 3-4 ghost shrimp(all female).I will then upgrade the tank to 5.5g.I know the fish might breed so I will have a 2.5g for the fry incase.Do you think this is a good combonation?
Tank 2 is a 10.38g with two australian rainbows,2 peppered corydoras, and 1 otocinclus I am going to add 1 albino corydoras and 1 clown plecostomus. They will then be upgraded to a 20g tank.Good combonation?
(Remember I just want opinions! I have already read up on these fish but you cant trust everything you read!)

I have this new betta I got from walmart. It seems pretty happy. Its got bubbles all over the waters surface. One day I've looked at his biggest fin ( the one at the back ) and it looked like it was missing little parts. It also had a small red outline that looked a lot like blood. Is he bititng his fins because of malnutriteon? ( I feed him 4-5 pellets every day). Whats up?
