It is genetics. Most black goldfish and koi turn orange, red, or white as they mature. Don't be surprised to see them change color in a year or two.

I don't know about black but all goldfish start out as dark green an don't get there coloring untoll they are about 6months two about 2 years of age.

they are usually born darker and turn gold as they get older.. we had a chocolate brown goldfish with black above his top lip and within 6 months he turned pale gold
